No midi sound on laptop

Hi

I have installed Cubase Elements 15 on my desktop computer and my laptop.

On the desktop everything works perfectly but on the laptop I get no sound when I import a midi file. Audio works ok on both computers but midi playback only on the desktop.

The desktop runs through a sound blaster and the laptop works with realtek driver.

I would appreciate any help

Hi,

The MIDI Output is set to Not Connected. Where do you want to send the MIDI data to?

As you can tell I am quite new to this.

Where it says ‘not connected’ it gives me the option of typing something in but I don’t know what to type.

I just want to hear the midi sound through the laptop speakers.

On my desktop it just works without any problem straight after installing and importing a midi file.

Hi,

I would recommend you to add HALion Sonic SE (virtual instrument) as an Instrument Track. Then, I would recommend to enable the GM Mode in HALion Sonic SE. Hopefully, the MIDI data will contain the Program Change messages. Then you would select the HALion Sonic SE as an output of all the MIDI Tracks and you will hear the HALion Sonic SE sounds.

This is the basic and easiest way.

Please keep in mind that MIDI itself has no sound. It is a bunch of playing instructions for sound modules. Much like a conductor in an orchestra.
That’s why you need to have something that receives the MIDI data and turns it into sound. Martin suggested Halion Sonic SE. Please kindly ignore the “SE” part, the plugin is called “Halion Sonic” and is an optional install of Cubase 15.

If you look into the Preferences dialog (Edit menu), into the section MIDI → MIDI File
you will find import options for Midi files there. One is called “Destination” and allows you to chose that Halion Sonic will automatically be loaded and assigned to Midi tracks when importing a Midi file.

I think Halion Sonic failed to install when I installed Cubase on my laptop.

Should solve the problem I think.

Midi is computer data, it doesn’t have a sound.
You need to set a VST instrument for the midi data to trigger.
