Good day,
I’m very new to Dorico and hope this wasn’t answered before. Tried to find answers using the search function but for that particular problem i couldn’t find anything yet…
I 'd like to use the VSL Starter Edition as playback instruments. Everything works properly on the Halion etc. playback libraries.
Problem 1: When i select notes by mouse click in write-mode they should sound. In certain sounds (especially woodwinds in this case) they only sound by selecting notes that are in legato. Whole notes for example don’t sound by clicking them, but they do in playback.
Problem 2: selecting a staff to play the instrument with a midi keyboard works only in about 50% of the cases. Sometimes it just makes no sound. Clicking around, selecting other staffs and playing instruments sometimes solves the problem… what could that be?
Of course i restarted many times, clicked back and forth between many playback libraries etc.
I really like to use VSL plugins but it seems they always make problems with any of the programs i’d like them to use in.
I am not sure, but your issue could be related to the Expression Map used. Which one do you use?
Also, not sure if this is related to your issue but: from my experience with VSL libraries, they tend to load the samples after one note is played, so the first time you try to play the samples, no sound is heard because this only triggers the loading of the sample.
If you could create and post a Diagnostic (from the Help menu, eventually post a link to a cloud service where you upload the Diagnostics), it could be helpful for the Team to search the culprit.
You are new to the Forum, so maybe you need to read the Forum a little bit to enhance your Trust Level, so you can post files and links.
I suggest you wait for the Team to respond on the Diagnostics that you upload, before making a clean install. Maybe it is only a little setting that is faulting…
Also if you could upload a Project (also without music) that shows the issue, I am sure that someone else that has your Library can take a look and possibly find the problem.
I don’t have any VSL libraries myself, so I’m unable to easily investigate this directly, but I took a quick look at your project to see whether Dorico is finding an appropriate switch in the expression map when selecting notes, and it does seem to be: for example, when selecting the first whole note in the flute instrument, it’s finding the switch in the expression map defined for the Natural playing technique with the < Short note length condition. (This isn’t necessarily the best switch, because of course the note in question is longer than a short note, but it should nonetheless be sufficient for it to produce a sound.)
And I can verify that Dorico is indeed sending MIDI controllers and the expected notes to the VST plug-in, so I believe things are working as they should.
it sounds from your Expression Maps as if you’re using the Special Edition library (presumably vol1) rather than Synchron Prime. If that is the case, as I have that library, I could try to reproduce what you’re finding . Will try what you’ve posted and let you know what I come up with
had a look at this now and unfortunately, all the notes audition as expected for me and I can play the instruments with my MIDI keyboard as well. There are a couple of errors I’ve found - first your clarinet is listed as a section player rather than solo so for me at any rate no sound is loaded for this instrument. I noticed also that the flute was very quiet – the reason here is that CC11 Expression was set low in the Synchron player rather than the default of 127. VSL maps do not use CC11 so this won’t be reset according to dynamics in the score.
It’s just possible that the VSL playback template might make a difference. I don’t have that installed (and for some reason, it’s not currently available for download, otherwise I could briefly install it for testing) , though the Expression Maps do load as normal so we should be hearing the same thing.
Thanks for the input i changed to a solo instrument and the CC11 expressions. Good to learn how to set these things.
Yes its Synchronizes Special #1 that i own.
I am running it now with a template made from Dorico Wizard inside the Vienne Assistent and loaded in Dorico.
Thanks, i also tried to change note conditions for these notes, but nothing changes. Still i can only hear legato notes but not the whole notes when selecting them in write-mode.
I can see now if i click the whole note the articulation in Synchron player changes from “legato / legato” to “short notes / portato” and that is crossed out ! Quite clearly that is the problem.
But it seems the expression mappings are correct in Dorico. They should be C#0 (Long notes) and C1 (Sustain) according to what should get selected in Synchron Player. But theres the weird thing, because it doesn’t. Did i maybe miss something?
Now it also makes sense why i can only play instruments sometimes. It depends on if i selected before a whole note (NO Sound, crossed out) or a legato note (Sound)! We are getting there
Hi @christophpun , I have also Synchronised SE 1Plus, and can confirm that all is working as expected in your project, after changing the Clarinet to Single Player as @dko22 suggested.
But I am using the Playback Template (and Expression Maps) that came just before the Dorico Wizard…: “VSL for Dorico” or something like that (they seem to not be available anymore on VSL site).
@christophpun
If you are on Mac I found in my archive the Version 81 (October 2021) for VSL-for-Dorico. Send me a private message and I can send it to you.
my problem got solved with the help of VSL support.
Dorico gave out wrong expression mappings because the template i created with Dorico Wizard was not only for my VSL Library (special edition 1) but for another Library (Special Edition 1 Plus) as well. Thats why things got mixed up, later in playback etc.
When creating a Dorico VSL Template with the Dorico Wizard one needs to uncheck all the libraries one doesn’t own. My mistake was to just read special edition 1 and didn’t look further into it and that i need to uncheck 3 boxes for the add on that also showed up.
Thanks for all your help. I learned a lot of things.
