No Playback volume

Up till now I had to turn up the volume on every instrument for the initial playback on a new arrangement. Now I find that there is no sound even when I do that. Are there any fixes for this problem?

Can you run a Diagnostic Report from the Help menu and post the result here?

The fader default value you can change somewhere in the Dorico preferences.

For the no sound issue we need a diagnostic report. So please start such new project where no sound comes out and then do from the Dorico menu Help > Create Diagnostic Report. The corresponding zip file please attach to a reply here. Thanks

Thank you for your quick response.

Hi @brjwright80 , thanks for the data.

The audio driver can not find any port to stream out to. When you go to Edit > Device Setup and there click on the Device Control Panel button, a new little window appears. In the list of output ports, is there nothing listed? Maybe you could take a screenshot. Thanks

It shows in these pictures that it’s connected to the laptop speakers, but there was still no playback sound. I tried changing the output to a bluetooth speaker (not listed in the photo yet). The sound worked on that device. I then switched back to the laptop speakers, and it worked there as well. I’m not sure what happened, but the sound seems to be working now.

It seems to have been one of those dreaded sample rate issues. Compare the two screenshots, in the upper one it says sample rate is 48000 and below it is 44100. I can’t tell you exactly what was going on with you there, but it goes along the line that the speakers are at 48000Hz and Dorico wants them to be at 44100Hz, but the OS can’t make the switch and therefore Dorico does not “see” any output port and thus stays mute. Choosing the BlueTooth device shook the whole audio system and everything is back to good. Which brings me back to my general advice to run every audio app and all devices at the same sample rate. Doesn’t matter which one, 44100 or 48000Hz, but just stick to one. Quite often BlueTooth devices can only 48000Hz, then obviously that’s the best choice.

Out of curiosity… I thought the new(ish) Steinberg built-in ASIO driver automatically fixed these differences (or am I misremembering the history)?

Theoretically, yes, but as we can see in this case, it can still go somehow wrong. That’s why I’m saying, I don’t know exactly what happened there and can only make assumptions, too. So please don’t nail me to the ground.

But with the arrival of the new Steinberg Built-in ASIO Driver, the situation did improve a lot. I think this is fair is to say, or not?

Well, thank you for the explanation and the help. There’s always something to learn with Dorico!
