No sound after Windows update using Dorico 6

I have Dorico 6, and I tried all of the steps from this Dorico video called “Troubleshooting Playback in Dorico”, but it still doesn’t work.
I use a midi keyboard to separte audio speakers plugged into my Windows PC. Metronome works but audio does not after update. I restarted as well. I’m using Dorico 6 SE. ALso, I see that there is a Dorico 6.2 update, but when I try to open Download Assistant, it says it cannot establish a connection. I hope someone can help me! Thanks!

Hi @cjcCAT , welcome to the forum.

Please create a new project from piano template and then from Dorico’s menu select the item Help > Create Diagnostic Report. The corresponding zip file please send to u dot stoermer at steinberg dot de

From the contained logs and things I can give further advice.

Regarding the Dorico update, you can also download the installer directly from this page.

Thanks for your help! I’m just playing around with nursery rhymes, trying to learn how to use the software. I went to the link you posted to upload the latest version and clicked on all of the updates, but I don’t see any changes. Still says Dorico 6.

My midi keyboard is plugged into a plugable USB docking station, which connects to two Bose speakers. When I play audio on other sites, I just double checked and the sound is coming through the speakers (not through the laptop).

Download a new copy of the Download Assistant from here:

Make sure that there aren’t any open dialog boxes hidden behind other windows.

Have you checked Device Setup (under edit) and selected the appropriate driver for your setup?

Thanks for the data, @cjcCAT .

Several things I have to note. Dorico 6 is a major update and that one does not replace/overwrite Dorico 5, instead it gets newly installed in parallel to Dorico 5. So if you go to C:/Program Files/Steinberg/ you will find subfolders for both versions. Go inside the Dorico 6 folder and start the app from there.

Sound is currently set up with you to come out of “Digital Audio (S/PDIF) (High Definition Audio)”, quite likely not that what you want. Therefore go to Edit > Device Setup and there click on the Device Control Panel button where you can choose other output ports. Or you want to choose a completely different driver.

Third, you have HALion Sonic SE 3.5, HALion 6 and HALion Sonic 7 installed. At the moment you are set up in a way, that Dorico chooses HALion 6 for playback. I’d recommend though to change your preferences to use HALion Sonic 7 as default player.

Now, point 2 and 3 are pertinent for your Dorico 5 installation. When you launch Dorico 6 you might get different preferences and initial values, so please also check in that context.

And if you still struggle with D6, send a “fresh”" diagnostic report.

These are the only options on my control panel. What should I choose?

Also, how do I change your preferences to use HALion Sonic 7 as default player? I went to Edit>Preferences>Play and it only had “Halion” to select, but no other choices.

I can’t tell for sure, but what you have currently chosen (Plugable Audio), is most likely for a cabled headphone. So either you plug-in a headphone, or you choose the other, Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio). That should be it.

And in the preferences dialog on the Play tab it should look like this:

But with you there is only HALion in the drop down list?

And one more detail: The logs show that you have Dorico 6.0.0 running, but version 6.2.20 is already available, which is a free update for existing Dorico 6 customers. So please go and grab it, since it contains lots of bug fixes.

Thanks! I can get sound now! (And I made the updates)
