Used a MIDI input from my keyboard for the first time, have been recording analogue previously. Getting a signal on the track so it’s recording, but no sound on playback. The main track that I’ve imported into Cubase is playing back fine. Any ideas?
MIDI has no sound, you need to send the midi into an instrument to make sound.
If it’s the sound of your keyboard you want to hear, you have to route the track output back out to it.
Alternatively you can load a VST instrument (easiest to do on an instrument track) and move the midi on to it….also you’ll need to turn off the track input monitor when you want to hear playback
I can hear my keyboard while recording, but not on playback. I’m recording direct from the MIDI on thr keys into the steinberg interface.Despite the keyboard track showing sound has been recorded? The main track plays back fine. I’ve tried turning off the track input monitor. No difference
That is because your keyboard sends its notes to both, the midi output and its own internal sound generator at the same time.
But if you play back the midi data from Cubase it is going nowhere, your keyboard does not receive any instructions to generate sound and thus you don’t hear anything.
Think of midi as a conductor in front of an orchester, if it helps you. Right now there is only the conductor but the orchester is in another building and cannot see him. So all is silent.
