No sound from my midi keyboard

Hi, I’m using CB11 Artist and turned everything on as usual. However, this time I couldnt get any sound from my midi keyboard. Its a Korg KROSS which is connected to my audio interface (SSL 2+) in the normal way. I havent touched anything. Nothing from the meters when I try to play it. Interface is working ok for playback. I’ve tried a different cable from keyboard to interface, still nothing. Really strange! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I found the midi connection a bit challenging. This might not be the answer, but here’s what I found…this is just for me, so it may not work for you.

I found that I have better luck if I turn on my keyboard before I open Cubase. Now when I create a midi track (or instrument track), the routing is on the left at the top of the list or in the Instrument setup applet. In mine, It shows several options with Graphite (my keyboard) in the list; I choose the one that doesn’t have a midi channel in the name…it just says Graphite. Then, next, is the midi inputs; I choose ‘any’ or ‘all’, whatever it says. That’s the input routing. That pretty much sets it up to trigger whatever instrument you assign to it. Like I said, this is what works for me. Hope this helps.

Thanks Albert.
Unfortunately, I can’t see the name of my keyboard anywhere on any of my projects anymore. It’s like Cubase doesn’t see the keyboard which is odd because I’ve done nothing since I last used it, when it was fine, and now! Head scratcher.

Regards

That could be due to the Cubase version you have; maybe Artist doesn’t identify the keyboard by name (just a thought, not a reason). If you have a ‘midi port’ option showing up in the ‘input’ list, then select that one.

Turns out that a Windows update on my PC conspired to add software so that my Korg Kross was no longer visible. The update affected the driver. I will need to contact the manufacturer to ask about it. Thankfully, I have an old Evolution keyboard which has no such issues and works just fine. So, it’s not a Cubase issue afterall! :+1:

Are you using the KORG drivers for your Kross? Sounds like you are. If so, uninstall them.

Here is KORG’s request and their instructions for how to uninstall the driver:

It’s likely their uninstaller will mess up some registry entries on your system. To fix that, go to Windows MIDI / Audio and read the full post in #start-here that the invite lands you on.

The “normal” way?

  1. Are you using USB or MIDIdim cable?
  2. or - Are you trying to send audio from your Korg?
  3. or - are you trying to send Midi signals to Cubase?

Too little info to track down issues!!

Hi Buer, thanks for your response.

So, I connect the Korg to my SSL 2+ via a usb.

I don’t use the sounds on the Korg. Just for midi to use Cubase factory sounds.

Seems like the Korg driver on my PC was affected after a recent Windows update. I have since connected an older Evolution keyboard via the same method and that works just fine.

So, it’s a Windows driver/Korg issue rather than a Cubase issue!

Many thanks

So you’re ok then? Good to hear!
