I have checked and tried all the different options for my device ins and outs. (built-in-speakers etc.)
I have added new instances of Halion, to test, no luck.
nothing is solo’s or muted
I have a bunch of spitfire libraries loaded in various instances of Kontakt, they all respond to my MIDI keyboard, and show output in the Kontakt window. Same with Halion, it shows output, and recognition of my MIDI keyboard in the plug-in window. But no signal at individual mixer channels, nor Dorico mixer output.
I enabled the Dorico metronome. Nothing.
Opening other, or new projects, everything is fine. This is project specific.
I have a feeling that the answer will make me blush, but I hope this is useful to newer users as well, as I have tried most solutions, and searches, and nothing has turned up.
cheers

Hi @aleos , would you please send that specific project to u dot stoermer at steinberg dot de ? I’m sure I will be able to see from the data what is wrong. Thanks
Very strange, actually the audio engine state says the master channel as well as other channels are in fact muted. Dorico however shows all of them as not muted. So this discrepancy is a bug in our software. It is a rare condition, but we have never been able to get behind the scene of it.
If you toggle twice the mute button of the master output channel you should get sound back.
Hey Ulf,
Thanks so much for the quick reply. Ok, that’s good to know. I think it happened to me once before 6-7 months ago, but the project was just a non-important sketch, and I simply started something new.
But this one was a bigger work in progress.
I double toggled the master mute twice, and yes, things are working. I should mention that when I toggled it mute button, I got the Mac spinning rainbow ball, and the computer Dorico was unresponsive for about 10 seconds. When I toggled it for the second time, it did the same.
Don’t know if this is helpful in your bug-hunt, but it did seem like my computer was struggling for a bit.
Ok, thanks again for solving it. I appreciate your time.
Yes, we have to keep an eye on this one. We currently have no idea how it is possible that the Dorico state and that of the audio engine can diverge so much.
Please also tell if you have any kind of suspicions or assumptions why or when the divergence started. Any input from you is also highly appreciated.
If it’s any help, my work in Dorico doesn’t vary too much. That is:
I compose chamber music of max 10 instruments, with Spitfire BBC pro, and or Kontakt with spitfire libraries.
I compose and write with Dorico and Logic running simultaneously. Jumping back and forth between them. Sketching on Logic, and then inputting the notation in Dorico. In Logic, I will also be running BBC orchestra and or Kontakt.
I’m on a new MacBook Pro, with all software up to date. And my sound card is the Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt.
I just wanted to give you a little update on the state of my Dorico project and the bugs.
The ‘Mute’ bug, doesn’t seem to happen now. However, if I mute on the master output (like I frequently do), I get the Mac spinning rainbow ball. And after approximately 6 seconds, all the tracks are muted as normal. And for unmuting, the same 6 sec delay happens. But so far, it hasn’t actually caused the no-sound situation as before.
But another thing has popped up. And that is when I copy/paste.
I was copying a figure of 8th triplets this morning, and I got the spinning rainbow ball and a delay of a few seconds. It was a repeating figure and I pasted around 12 times. 80% of the time I pasted the ball appeared.
As well, I copied and pasted some text onto all staves at once, and I also got the spinning ball. A few times.
I’ve been on quite a busy work schedule the last 2 months, and have probably spent at least 4-5 hours a day on Dorico, so I can safely report that these issues were not happening say, 3 weeks ago. The copy/paste bug set to have begun today.
I opened up another project of mine with 4 Spitfire instruments, and there was no such issues.
Hi Alex, strange what happens during copy & paste now. Could you please send me the latest version of your project, so that I can see how it behaves on my machine? Thanks a lot
no worries Ulf all good, I’m sure you’re busy on this forum. I’m doing a bit more searching for ideas and composing, rather than inputting today, anyway.
Hi @aleos,
sorry for the late reply. Thanks for sending your project file. Though I don’t have all the instruments you have, but I could load it and copy and paste around in it without any problems. I asked Richard as well and he also found no issue, but he also does not have all your sounds.
How to proceed now? Please do the following:
Start the Activity Monitor app and look for Dorico in the list of processes and highlight it. Then turn to Dorico and copy and paste around. When it is slow again, go to the Activity Monitor again and sample the Dorico process. For that the Activity Monitor has a function. At the top middle of that window is a little icon with three dots inside. Click on that and choose Sample Process, save the output to a file, zip it up and send me. Would be even good if you could repeat that sampling one or two times, then we can even compare between the dump files. I hope that will give us a clue of what is going on on your system.
Thank you for your collaboration.
