No sound with hub preview in Control room

When I set up a project preview it works, but I cannot hear it in the Control room using Monitor 1 Bus (or headphones for that matter though it is supposed to go through the monitor as I understand). My routing is correct into the control room. When I go straight to outputs and disconnect the control room, I can hear the sound.

Using a Presonus Quantum ES 2 for interface.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Maybe it’s a bug?

Thanks

Chuck

Saying “it works” means the little back up project icon appears in the right side of the Hub correct? You play it and hear nothing?

One thing to check, and forgive me because this is one of the stupidest mistakes I did, and I have wasted time because I didn’t check the obvious, and due to my workflow, I didn’t discover it sooner…

In control room. MAKE SURE It’s ACTIVATED!
CONTROL ROOM

That little blue indicator is supposed to be a speaker…I guess. Anyway they changed this icon from prior versions and it’s not as apparent as it used to be.

Thank you for checking into my mystery.

With the Control Room ON there is not sound when I preview int the HUB and I am “instructed” to Open Audio Connections.

With Control Room OFF I can NOW preview in the Hub.

By default previewing is using Phones 1 , setting in preferences/VST/control room , I think.

Thanks for the response. However, it doesn’t work with phones either. When the Control room is activated I immediately lose audio and the box on the upper right indicates I need to “Open Audio Connections” when the audio connections are correctly setup for Control Room (trying both Monitor and phones). It only works on the bottom configuration. As soon as Control Room is disabled, the box changes to reflet the selection in the Outputs tab.

For clarity, it’s not indicating that you actually need to open them, it’s just what will show if you have control room enabled. Mine is working fine now but still shows the open audio connections button.

I struggled with this for a few days but did eventually get it working and had no issues since. The previews play through whichever speaker set was last selected when a project was open.

Thanks Grim

“Open Audio Connections” is displayed immediately when I activate the Control Room AND the audio cuts out, even though the PREVIEW icon in the HUB indicates audio is being played.

Disabling the Control Room and routing the OUTPUT through the OUTPUT tab displays proper connections and I can hear the audio.

I should be able to monitor the preview while in the CONTROL ROOM.

I’m thinking it is either a bug with Cubase, there is a setup function somewhere in the SETTINGS (or somewhere), or there is a problem with the Presonus ES2 Firmware. I do not use the Presonus UNIVERSAL CONTROL (though I have tried to resolve the issue with that software interface to no avail.

I can confirm what Grim said.

AFAIK, the open audio connections in the hub serves no purpose when using the control room.

Previews work for me when using the control room. The audio output used is the last one I had in use when I last had a project open.

We can see in your screencap you have 2 sets of outs not connected…..are you sure that one of these is not the last selected?

Open Cubase, make sure you hear audio over speakers (maybe check you hear preview audio over speakers too - so in media browser for example), close the project and hub will open….do you have preview there now?

Yes Grim, there are two sets of outs not connected in the Control Room. One is the CUE and the other is PHONES. I only have two main outputs and can only use those connections one function at a time i.e. I can connect with phones but cannot connect with the other two. I have disabled “only monitor previews through the phones” option via the Settings.

I get NO sound through the speakers and no sound into the interface when the Control Room is selected. I also cannot preview sound clips in MEDIA using the Control Room. And now it seems I cannot preview clips at all where before (for a while) I was able to preview them. I still can hear the audio from the Control Room on a track in a project.

I have the updated firmware from Presonus. But I’m thinking this interface is a piece of junk when it comes to interfacing the audio with Cubase. It seems very glitchy. Sometimes it works and for no apparent reason it quits.

I think my next step will be to contact tech support at Presonus and if that doesn’t work… get another interface that has a good track record with interfacing.

Can or can’t?? You said just two sentences before that you get NO audio through control room so this is confusing.

I get audio from a project track while in control room. In the project.

I do not get audio when previewing a plugin clip AND I do not get audio when I preview the project in the HUB with control activated.

I also just started a ticket with Presonus Tech. I did notice that when selecting my DAW they do not have a selection for Cubase 14 or 15 so maybe my problems are that it is not supported.

I don’t know what you mean by a plugin clip.

Open the audio pool, select an audio file in your project and click the audio pool play button. Presumably you don’t hear anything, but do you see meters moving in control room?

Alternatively, delete the two unassigned outs so you only have one control room out. Do previews work then?

Plugin Clip = Go to the media tab on the right side. Select something like “Beat Agent”. When sampling the loop in the list in the Media. There is no audio. I guess I am equating loop and clip as one of the same. Sorry for the confusion.

No… deleting the other outputs has no effect.

Sampling an audio file from the pool I cannot hear the audio in the Control Room. Only when I switch to the Output tab in Audio setup and configure as shown in the screenshot.

Can we see a screencap of your control room?

Also wondering why is this a “virtual output”….is that the only option? Is that virtual Output shown in the Mac audio midi setup?

OH….IMPORTANT: In preferences/Control Room make sure use phones channel as preview channel is NOT ticked….because your phones channel is obviously unassigned.

Problem Solved:

I did not have “Listen” activated in Control Room. When I activated it and pushed the volume up….I have sound. As Homer Simpson would say (“Doh!!!)

Thanks for trying. I appreciated the help. It kept me going!

Chuck

Well if it works it works I guess….but Listen shouldn’t need to be active to hear previews in hub or from pool, media browser etc….still something slightly funky going on in your setup I think.

That my very well be, however I speak from hours of “learning experience” that not having the Control Room activate button…shown in post 2 above, and red-circled 5 times, will not give any sound for the Hub Preview.
