No staccato playback after xml-import

The attached file is part of a imported music-xml-file. Staccato and Legateo + Staccato are not recognized. The notes in Flow two are manually input and are recognized correctly. The violin is played by VSL Solo Violin.

staccato.dorico (1.4 MB)

The Key Editor shows that only the Legato playback technique is triggered for these notes/

If you change this Playback Option to Whole Note

then you get Legato + Staccato and the playback is OK. Not sure why you must set it to Whole Note and not Half…

pretty strange. I notice that in Flow 2, the tooltip description of the actual patch used moves to English here whereas in Flow 1 it stays in German - not that this is an explanation. However, if you simply use the system track to copy the entire contents of Flow 1 into Flow 2 then it works as expected so that should at least be a workaround. Something weird with the xml import – perhaps someone has seen something similar.

what you say is true but the crochet (1/4 note) setting in playback options is the same for both flows so doesn’t really explain why it works OK in flow 2. Also changing that setting to such a long duration might well have other side-effects. Still, it’s certainly one idea!

I have used the system track to copy the entire contents of Flow 1 into Flow 2; but with me it does not work as expected: it remains the same as on Flow 1. But when I copy not with the system track but “normal”, just the notes, the outcome ist better: The quarter notes are recognized, the half notes not. But then comes the idea of charles_piano: if I change the maximum duration for staccato to “half note” everything works as expected.

Thank you to both of you!

actually, repeating this test, it seems I now get the same. And when I changed the second note to a minim (half note) in your second flow, exactly the same issue occurs so in fact that doesn’t work properly either. Which led me straight back to Charles’ suggestion as of course it is expected behaviour than if minimum duration is set to a quarter and you try to put a dot over a half note, it won’t work. Dorico cannot distinguish between a portato and simple staccato, it seems – it would be useful if this behaviour could be changed as a simple staccato over a half note generally makes no sense but with a portato, the situation is rather different.

I believe Daniel once said that it is an implied “less than” value and not “less than or equal to”.
