Okay, I’ve watched the first four YouTube tutorials, and am trying to write a part in Dorico instead of Finale. I’m having this problem: I enter a note, and it remains selected. (I understand that is normal.) I want to next enter a dotted quarter note, so I press 5-period-pitch. But, whether I put the period before or after the 5, Dorico puts the dot on the previous note (the one that was selected). Is there some way to tell Dorico that I’m done with that note and want to enter a new one?
No, this is not normal. When you’ve entered a note, the caret advances. (Unless perhaps you are in chord mode. Is there a + at the top of the caret?)
Which entry mode are you using (pitch before duration, or duration before pitch)?

Along with @Janus’s answer, take a look at what you have for these two settings, in Preferences > Note Input and Editing > Note Input.

Well, I looked at the preferences and changed to look like yours. That seems to have helped some. I’ll keep working on it.
