Firstly, I have recently made the transition from Finale. When I’m entering in notes into a measure, I will change rhythmic values or click off the measure to double check what notes I want to put in and either way the measure automatically fills with rests. If I do an ‘undo’ it just removes the notes I previously put in. Is there a way to not have this automatic? Is takes time to click the rests and then have to go to edit>delete rest.
Secondly, when I do manage to get a rest in it is always invisible. Not too sure what is going on there but it isn’t visible.
Thirdly, the playback is very quiet even with my speakers, Dorico, and windows volume all maxed out. I was a drummer for many years but my hearing isn’t that bad, yet.
In Dorico, you generally don’t enter rests the way that you did in Finale – you just enter notes where you want them, and Dorico fills the rests in for you. These are called implicit rests.
During note entry, if you press the space bar, the caret will advance by the currently selected rhythmic duration. You can think of this as “entering” a rest of that duration. Some users have also mapped this command to another key, like NumPad 0.
You can also use the arrow keys to advance the caret by the current rhythmic grid duration.
It’s also possible to enter explicit rests, but in general this is not needed and can have unwanted side effects.
I’m not sure exactly what you mean about “invisible” rests, but it’s probably related to your use of Edit > Remove Rests. Can you upload a screenshot – or even better, a small project file that demonstrates the issue? Since you’re a new user, you probably need to spend some time reading other posts before the forum gives you permission to upload.
