So now the definition of this note is: “Ride Cymbal (Low)” + playback technique “Edge (cymbals)”
which is the B3 in the percussion map (see above) and B2 in Groove agent.
However the B2 is not triggered.
What is triggered now is a “natural” ride (D#2 in Groove agent). In other words adding the playback technique “Edge (cymbals)” to Ride cymbal (low) didn’t trigger the B3 in the percussion map, but the D#3 (playback technique “Natural”)
In the attachment the thing I think you want to achieve. Cymbal Edge.dorico (2.5 MB)
What did I do?
I added a playback technique Edge wich triggers the Edge (cymbals) the default playback technique edge triggers a rim. You can name it whatever you want.
I did the same as you in Edit percussion kit.
Now it should work already that you you get the default edge sound of the ride cymbal. Check this out because maybe you like it.
To get the crash cymbal sound I opened the percussion map Groove Agent SE Studio Kit and on midi note 49 I added a key switch alternative. Ride Edge Ride Cymbal (Low) Edge (cymbals).
Thanks for your advice and example project. Your solution is in line with my first experiment (not mentioned in my original post), where I tried to use an explicitly notated playing technique to trigger the right patch (the equivalent of your “Edge” text).
But since I’d like to avoid explicit notation I experimented a bit more and I found an elegant solution.
On the ride cymbal (in the drum definition) I have to create a separate notehead with edge playing technique (instead of changing the original notehead)
Only for mockup playback… I have another drum staff for “reading” with slashes and cues and the occasional detailed notation.
For the playback staff I try to find ergonomic ways to trigger certain sounds, but at the same time I try to stay close to traditional notation, so that the staff remains easily readible for myself.
