Hi to everyone. I’m new in Cubase 14 Elements. I’m trying to test the VST instruments just using the keyboard editor of the instrument instead of the external midi keyboard and I got surprised that it is not recording the midi track although I can hear the sound and the level bar of the console detects de sound. Is this a regular behaviour? Do I have to modify any settings to get the instrument recording without keyboard? I’m pretty sure that I didn’t have this problem with older Cubase versions. Thanks in advance.
Yes, if the VST manufacturer designed it like that.
Well it’s not usually done this way. The on screen keyboard is really just for testing after few setting changes. Some VSTs (not all) allow limited control using a querty keyboard. Really though, as a beginner, get yourself a decent MIDI keyboard for your budget if h=yuo have not done this already.
If your just at the experimental stage a cheap MIDI keyboard can do a simple job, but if you want to learn how to play a keyboard, (which I advise) then get something decent like a Roland FP series. As your fingers develop you will require touch sensitivity to control the musicality of your performance and this varies widely and is a constant source of debate, but the Roland FPs have good touch. If you want a Controller Keyboard with more Cubase control tehn this is entirely a different matter and be warned set up is often a complete nightmare. I manage without one and can do everything easily. I have owned perhaps ten or so, and none of them were kept. All you need is a MIDI out to control any VST.
At a push, there is also an on board keyboard, underthe Studio Tab, this is strictly for train journies, not a serious tool. You can also enter notes using Notation or Piano Roll

The same text you’ll find in the manual for C14 element on page 240.
The virtual keyboards on vsts simply don’t route back to the midi input of a track for recording, record arming the track can’t change this behaviour.
I think everyone is referring to different thing’s here…
@RicardM What do you mean by the “editor’s keyboard”? Can you provide a screenshot, please?
There’s possibly an internal keyboard provided within the plugin on the one hand and on the other hand the On-Screen-Keyboard provided by the DAW.
No, right you are Grim. But the onscreen keyboard does the trick. I should have pointed the difference. ![]()
He’ll find it in ‘studio/onscreen keyboard’ .
Oh, no, I think it was already clear from the instruction you posted…..I was only mentioning it because of ATC’s line of questioning after your post.
LOL
Welcome to the forum @RicardM !
Lot of help here ![]()
If you have made it to this point you have most probably read the solution to your problem ![]()
The DAW’s On-Screen-Keyboard is not for everyone but it definetly works and some use it on travels. If you are planning to buy a separate keyboard there are plenty of options. Most keyboards are connected via USB although there are still keyboards around which can also be connected via MIDI cable.
Thanks you all. Your kind answers have been very helpful. The Onscreen Keyboard works really fine for my needs.
I already have a midi keyboard but I like plug it only to play, not for test. I prefer to test the VST instruments sounds using the PC (onscreen) Keyboard instead of plugging the midi keyboard.
Best regards
Glad to hear that.
Would you be so kind and mark @Buer 's first post as solution, please? Provided that it solved your problem, of course.
Cheers!
