I don’t mind at all reading the manual to learn something, but I’m not sure how to phrase my search query.
So, here’s what I’m wanting to do:
I have a Nord Grand. I want to record the midi from it so I can tweak notes and correct mistakes, but I also want to ultimately record the audio output from it for the final product. I’m recording my wife playing flute (got that worked out) and my vocal (also figured that out), but not sure how to set up tracks in Cubase (I’m using Cubase 15 Pro).
Do you have an audio interface hooked up to your computer that has midi ports? Are those midi ports setup and ready to go inside of cubase and your Nord hooked up to those ports?
Or are you asking how to create and configure a midi track and an audio track to record both coming from the nord?
You have basically two choices: the classic way with a MIDI track where you record the MIDI data from your Nord, then an audio track where you connect the audio inputs from your Nord to and record that while playing back the MIDI track.
Or you can create an External Instruments for your Keyboard. This is already documented everywhere, just search for it.
I have a Volt 476 connected. The Nord Grand is connected through USB direct to the computer, so not using the midi ports on the Volt. When I go back at it again today, I’m going to try the simpler method recommended by @fese , which is to make sure I can get midi to and from the Nord. I know I’ve got audio coming in because I’ve been able to record the Nord output into Cubase.
The goal of all this is to have an editable piano part (in midi) where I can clean up any mistakes and then re-record its audio as needed. (I’m tracking my vocal, my piano and my wife’s flute live. She nails it every time. I can go back and patch in vocal things if needed. Being able to correct piano mistakes is my final thing.)
Thanks! I did find a YouTube video that outlines the two methods you describe. I think for now I’m going to try the simpler, classic way you describe. I’m still a relative newb when it comes to things Cubase.
Have both the audio and MIDI tracks record armed at the same time so they both record what’s happening. (Pic is just an example of the rec arm buttons)
If you click on another track it will break that, so you would have to turn off ‘rec arm follow focused track’ in the settings, if you don’t want that to happen. Locking the tracks should lock the rec arm but doesn’t. I will probably complain about that.
