Note input and selection sound is extremely loud — how can I reduce it?

I’m experiencing an issue where the sound played during note input or note selection is extremely loud.
The overall playback volume (via the transport bar, pressing P, or starting playback from the beginning of the flow) is at a comfortable level, and the audition volume for specific staves at specific moments is also fine.
However, the sound triggered when entering, selecting, or moving notes is far louder and becomes painful to work with.

I cannot find any setting in Dorico that allows adjusting the volume of these audition events separately.
This problem becomes even more noticeable because the passage I’m working on is marked with extremely soft dynamics, making the audition sound disproportionately loud.

Is there any way to reduce the volume of the sound that plays when:

  • entering notes
  • selecting notes
  • moving notes

If other users have experienced the same issue, please share your examples or solutions.

Thanks.

Try this setting under Preferences->Note Input and Editing.

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.
However, it appears that this setting is not functioning as expected. I do not hear any noticeable difference between values such as 100 and 10 — the sound plays at essentially the same loudness in both cases.
If you have any further suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them.

You’re right, not working here either. It used to work. Or maybe you have to restart Dorico for it to take effect.

I’ve been experiencing the same issue since about two weeks. I linked it to my attempt to install and configure some virtual audio ports. I gave up on that idea and subsequently uninstalled the software (was it called BlackHole?).

@prko @jesele
are you both on a mac or windows computer?
I was wondering if it might have to do with an OS update..

MacBook Air M5 latest Tahoe.

Jesper

I updated to Tahoe just recently, too.

If you have NotePerformer, this issue has been mentionned:

Yes, I use NotePerformer…
Why does the NotePerformer team not fix this?
It is sad…

I’m tagging @Wallander in case it’s possible to solve the issue.

How about reducing the default master output level in Preferences > Play

As far as I understand, the adjustment you mentioned affects all of the following:

  1. Playback by pressing P, using the transport bar, etc.
  2. Scrub Playback by pressing Opt/Ctrl–Space or Opt/Ctrl–Shift–Space.
  3. Audition when entering a note.
  4. Audition when selecting a note.

The issue that NotePerformer 5.1 users are experiencing concerns specifically No. 3 and No. 4.
For this reason, I don’t believe your suggestion resolves the problem.
