Note Input and the Select button

In cleaning up an imported midi score I find I am constantly mousing over to click that Select button on and off. I click it on to select a rest, then off so that I can use the mouse to select a pitch. And repeat. Is there a keyboard shortcut to toggle Select?

And is there somewhere an explanation of what if means to have both Note Input and Select on? (it apparently prevents mouse note entry for instance). Throw in pitch-before-duration on or off and all the different combinations of three seem hopelessly tangled.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Let’s start there and work backwards.

I’ve never clicked the Select button once in 6 years of daily Dorico use…

You definitely don’t need to toggle the Select tool on or off. You can still edit existing notes with the mouse even when mouse input is disabled (i.e. when the Select tool is activated).

It would certainly be helpful to know a bit more about what you’re trying to do. It sounds like you might be working in a non-optimal way, which is not your fault: you have just not discovered the optimal way, which is Dorico’s failing rather than yours.

To me the arrow icon just means disable mouse input. I leave it highlighted at all times, because I input notes via keyboards (computer or midi).
