Note input with MIDI keyboard not working anymore

Suddenly the MIDI keyboard input is not working anymore. Well not quite suddenly, I had’nt used it for a rather long while (several months I think), and now I wanted to use it, but to no avail.
In this meantime there was at least one (maybe two) Dorico updates, might tha have to do something with this? I had not changed any settings in the Play area, I have now checked the forum and tried several suggestions made earlier (WinRT, MIDI through, MIDI controllers etc), but nothing seems to do the trick.
The keyboard itself is recognized in the preferences (see screenshot):

and also gives some lights as sign that is is alive and kicking, I have another MIDI keyboard and that gives the same non-result.
Anyone any bright idea?
(Win11, Dorico latest version)

Just check that this keyboard input is working ok in Musescore… (still have it to be compatible with older sources I made).
So keyboard itself is working, and MIDI connection seems to be there also (hence the display of the name in the screenshot).

Please create a new project from piano template, confirm that MIDI input does not work and then from the menu choose Help > Create Diagnostic Report and then post the corresponding zip file here. Thanks

Done, and indeed did not work…
thanks in advance!
Dorico Diagnostics.zip (548.5 KB)

It’s a bit of a long shot, but please go to the Play page of Preferences, expand the Advanced Options section, activate the WinRT MIDI checkbox, click Apply to apply the changes, then quit and restart Dorico.

Sorry, that did not work…
Every time I try, I also check in Musescore, just to be sure that it is not the MIDI itself or the keyboard, but there it works everytime just as it used to in Dorico.

Also tried to disconnect the StreamDeck, and the setting about MIDI controllers, nothing.

Found something!
In the diagnostics I noticed preferences.xml and also 2 OLD versions.
Replaced current preferences.xml by the one with date 12-05-2024, and presto keyboard works again…
Now trying to find out what differnences there are between those two files!

Have found the culprit:

When project activation is set to “Never” the keyboard does not work.
When activation is set to “Always” it works fine.
When activation is set to “Ask”, the keybaord works when you select “Activate”, and does not work when you select “Do not activate”.
So that is rather consistent, but this behaviour beats me, but hopefully you can sort out why this is happening!
For me at this moment problem solved…
And thanks for the assistance!

@JeroenH I think there is nothing to sort out: if your project is not activated the MIDI input is also deactivated. You can anytime Activate/Deactivate your projects using the Activate Project button (blue is activated, grey is deactivated):

The preferences that you are referring to, make possible to manage what happens if you are going to open multiple projects. As every time that you switch a project window with another, if both Projects are activated, Dorico needs some time to load the sounds. So choosing for example Activate subsequent project on load: Never, makes sure that you will not have multiple projects activated when you open a new project, avoiding so the time you would need to wait for the sounds loading, when switching between the windows. This is useful for example when you need only to copy some items between projects.

@Christian_R thank you for clarifying, but it strikes me as a little odd that you disable the MIDI input by deactivating the playback. For me this connection was not clear.
I remember now that I switched this activation to “never”, because I sometimes hit a wrong key and then suddenly the score was playing.
I almost never use playback of scores, I use Dorico for notation, and after this activation swited of I never had that trouble again. So was happy with that, until now

You could delete the shortcuts for playback in the Preferences/Key Commands…

…and leave your project activated, so you don’t accidentally hit some playback key, you have your MIDI input, and in case you need some playback control you can press the green play icon or use the extended Transport Window, where you have access to Play from selection, for example:

Yes I know now :grinning:, thank you!

Hi JeroenH, I have the same problem, trying to use my Midi keyboard with Dorico.
Where can I find the Project Activation you are referring to? Thank you!

Hi @Dale_Senaga, and welcome to the Forum.

You can find those settings in the Preferences > Play

Also see my post above for further explanations.

To Christian-R, thank you for replying. As you probably can tell, I’m new to Dorico, and
have a lot to learn. I tried your advice, but apparently, that wasn’t the problem. I then tried to
restart Dorico since I didn’t do so after upgrading to Dorico 6, and now my note input using a
MIDI keyboard works just fine. Thank you for your time and trouble.
