Note Performer alongside VST sample

Hi

I am using the default Note Performer sounds to notate a standard string quartet. Also, I have set up an sfz sampler containing the sound of a player knocking the body of the cello with knuckles (as a percussive effect in one part). The percussive part is notated on the cello staff using x note heads and suppressed playback. An additional percussion staff (box; cajon) has been created to trigger the sampled knocking sound. It will be hidden in the final engraving.

How do I use this percussion staff to trigger the sfz samples instead of Note Performer’s cajon sound?

Eddie

I wait to be proved wrong, but I don’t think you can use two VSTs on one instrument.

You might be able to use Independent Voice Playback; putting those notes into a separate voice and having that voice assigned to a different VST.

Independent Voice Playback is definitely the route to follow. You should be able to transpose the sfz to trigger your sample at a pitch on the cello stave. Notate the x notes at that pitch and it should all work seamlessly - no need to mess with hiding a percussion staff.

Thanks. I’ll give that a go.

Is this still the case? I’d like to use, for example, the sustained violin from EWQLSO Solo Violin and the pizzicato from Orchestral Tools First Chairs solo violin. Does it still require Independent Voice Playback? Or conversely, setting up two instruments and then doing an instrument change?

It would be very nice if it would be possible to set up an expression map that could address different ports as well as different midi channels. This would enable us to set up a VEP pro instance with multiple VSTs and mix and match the articulations we want from different libraries.

I think this is already possible. As an example, in VEP Server, create a new instance and load up your EW sustain on port 1, channel 1. Load up OT pizz on the same port, but use channel 2. Now your expression map can just use channel-switching as the trigger since they are both using port 1. Unfortunately, you are limited to 16 MIDI channels.

EDIT: but I agree, port switching would be a nice expression map enhancement.

Thanks, derAbgang! I tried this and it works. It is important to remember, however, to set the midi channel of the channel strips in VEP to the proper ports and midi channels. In addition, it is important also to set the midi channels of the VST plugins themselves — eg, Opus and Sine — to the proper midi channels.

This is confusing but it does work.
