Note Spacing Questions

Hello,

Coming from Finale to Dorico Pro, I don’t understand Dorico’s note spacing settings. The first screenshot is of Finale’s note spacing for a document that was sent to me. Could anyone please help me figure out the note spacing for Dorico to match the screenshot of Finale’s note spacing please and thank you? I’ve tried changing some settings in Dorico already, but I’m not having any luck. Thanks for the help!

Dorico doesn’t provide values for minimum and maximum measure width.

I’ve switched to Dorico two years ago and I dropped the effort to mimic Finale already at day 2.

Do you know how many bars Dorico considers for a short mulit-bar rest and a long multi-bar rest?

Check out the values in the “spacing widths” DB (lower right). They may help you.

Where’s that in Dorico?

Look under Note spacing in Layout Options. They are not exactly the same but are similar.

But I agree with @Vadian : Better to accept Dorico on its own terms.

The spacing parameters of multi-bar rests are specified in Engraving Options > Rests > Spacing.

Yes, I see that. However, Dorico doesn’t say how many bars for a multi-bar rest is considered for a short or long multi-bar rest.

Also, what did/do you mean by “DB” after “spacing widths”?

Gotcha. That makes sense now. I thought it was something else. Sorry!

I think I may have accidentally stumbled upon the note spacing I need. I just honestly started playing around with the values in the note spacing in the layout options, and it looks pretty close to the original document in Finale itself. I’m still not understanding what Dorico considers a short or a long multi-bar rest, though. Can somebody please help me understand that please?

I’m not sure, but don’t you define that yourself in Engraving options?

Wouldn’t in the case below a long multibar rest has a minimum of 10 bars?

That’s what I thought as well, but when I changed that value to a greater value, all of my multi-bars in my current project that had a lower value changed width.

Let’s show more.

This is how I interprete this (haven’t experimented with it)

If it’s a single bar, it uses 12 spaces.

From 10 bars and up, it uses 24 spaces.

From 2 to 9 spaces the width growth linear from 12 to 24 spaces.

If you change the 10 to 20, then 24 spaces is only reached with 20 bars. And where 5 bars would be halfway first, so 18 spaces, it’s now only at a quarter, so 15 spaces

What do you mean here by short and long? Do you mean these Finale settings?

That’s under Engraving Options > Rests > Multi-bar rests.

Set the first setting to “Old style”, and then set the number at the bottom to the threshold at which you want to switch to H-bars.

No, the settings TonH showed.
