NotePerformer 4 Mixer: Pan settings

In porting my orchestral score from Sibelius to Dorico, I find that the pan settings in the NP4 mixer are very different than they were under Sibelius (the import was done via the MusicXML format). That’s okay if it’s a default, but I’m finding that the pan settings in the NP4 mixer (there aren’t any other pan settings, are there?) are impossible to change in any reliable way. There is a circular slider that changes to what seem to be random values when dragged, and there appears to be no way to move a track from left to right or vice versa. Is this a limitation in the NP4 mixer under Dorico, or is there a trick I’m not aware of?

To adjust the pan values in the NotePerformer window, click and hold on the pan control and than drag downwards to pan to the left, and drag upwards to pan to the right.

Yes, that’s what I tried to do. I can change the pan value of an instrument on the left side to make it either more to the center or farther to the left - though I can’t do so in any reliable way, as the changes in the pan values appear to be random.

But for a track that is set to an L value, I cannot find a way to change it to an R value, and vice-versa.

Okay, I see what the problem is. First, I was trying to drag the control in a circular fashion, but only vertical movement does anything, and it does what you say. But also: as you move the slider closer to the center, it takes more and more mouse movement to change the value by the same amount. Which led me to think that the limit for the value was zero (VERY hard to reach zero with continuous dragging!). The trick is to release the mouse button, return the mouse to the control, and start dragging again, repeatedly if necessary. Though it took a lot of maneuvering, I was finally able to switch the 2nd violins to the right side.

Why they designed the control to make it difficult to pass the center point is beyond me, but it does work after all.

Thank you for your reply (I marked it as the solution).

I just tried this with my trackpad, and I do not find the same response. It seems to be linear throughout the compass, but of course it does respond to mouse scaling – i.e. when I move faster the cursor is accelerated so it covers more distance with the same mouse movement.

It’s possible it’s some setting on my system then. I mentioned this to a Wallander tech support person and will see what he says.
