Noteperformer 5.1 Brass

Thanks for the tip, learned something new again!

This is probably a very basic question, but is there a way to save changes made in the NP expression map as default for new projects?

Just make a copy of the NotePerformer map and make your changes on that. You can then use that to create a new endpoint and a new Playback Template if you prefer.

Can anyone see, or hear, what’s happening in my file? I’d still like to know if its NP, Dorico, or XML translation related. Or if I’m just hearing things…

@Wallander I wonder: to my ears it is now more important then before that when you route the instruments to the Dorico mixer you use the exact same panning as in the NP mixer. Is that correct?

Oh I have that disabled in playback options and haven’t enabled it in the expression maps.

I did find this on the NP website under “known issues in Dorico” which may have been the case this whole time.

Referring to your screenshot, does this mean that all four notated E’s are performed solo, or does it mean that the two voices on each staff are performed solo, so we end up with 2 performed notes?

I think the second.

The second. But this is only the case if you are using multiple voices. So the passages in my own music that have reduced volume must be due to using multiple voices because of differing rhythms.

I just installed noteperformer 5.1. This “blooming” is VERY noticeable to me and I can’t live with the results. I played around with the expression map, but nothing seemed to help. I’ve re-installed NP 4.5.1 and all is at well. I hope somebody has some suggestions on how to fix this in 5.1

I hear the “blooming” as well. I tried switching back to NP’s default reverb, and while it did make some things sound better, it didn’t affect the “blooming.”

Same here. In general, the sound is more lively and more transparant, very nice! But the timbre of the woodwinds is very shrill, and indeed: lots of blooming. I didn’t know that word, nice! Also the brass is brassy at very soft volumes, specially the French horn. Really strange, as most of the sounds are a real improvement over NP4

I notice those, too. However, Arne is definitely headed in the right direction with NP; the sounds in 5.1 are demonstrably better- even with their ‘artifacts.’

I’m happy to find I’m not losing my mind here. I thought I was the only one because no one else was commenting on this. I’ve been able to mitigate this somewhat by adding Steinberg reverb as an effect, but it’s tedious since I have to add it on each individual instrument. The added benefit is I can hand-tune it to “place” instruments on the stage if I decide the go that route.

Thanks for the tip. It hadn’t occurred to me to put a touch of reverb on each individual instrument instead of just a master insert.

Yeah, you can control placement with volume and other settings. Not sure of the performance hit on your system.

Since NP is light on resources, I should be ok.
