Hello! I am finding that my percussion input from the midi keyboard into Dorico is not working at all. The playback is fine, but to enter the notes, it does not map correctly, or at all. I have been inputting the notes using the qwerty keyboard, but would rather use my midi keyboard. Is there a set up that I might be missing? Or does this function not work?
Thanks!
Chris
Welcome to the forum, Chris. On the Note Input and Editing page of Preferences, I suggest you set Input onto kit or grid to Use percussion map. That way, whatever sounds you hear when you play those notes on your keyboard will be input into the kit in the appropriate place. You do need to make sure, of course, that the kit you’re trying to input into contains all the instruments you are trying to write for.
Thank you! I think the issue is with my NotePerformer set up along with Dorico. I think I need to seek some help with the NP Orchestral Percussion set up for a 5-line staff, triggering the orchestral map and sounds. To set up the traditional 5-line percussion staff used in school band/orchestra music, I have to (I think) add a “Basic Kit,” which triggers the drum set mapping and sounds. When changing the map to NP Orchestral Percussion of the map, it does not actually change. I will keep looking - appreciate the help!
If you want to create a kit for orchestral percussion, you’ll basically need to set it up yourself. In Setup mode, when you add your percussion player, click Create Empty Kit in the instrument picker. This will show the Edit Percussion Kit dialog. In here, you can add the various orchestral percussion instruments that you want to be included in the kit. (Choose how this kit appears in the layout, e.g. as a five-line staff or as a grid, on the Players page of Layout Options: by default, if it’s not a regular drum set, it will appear as a grid.)
Once Dorico knows what instruments you want to have in the kit, it will load the appropriate patch (or patches) using the playback template. At that point, I would expect NotePerformer to have its orchestral percussion patch loaded.
Now you should find that as you use step-time input, you play the note on your MIDI keyboard that produces the right instrument sound, and provided that instrument is included in the kit you set up, the right note will appear on the right instrument in the kit (either on the appropriate grid line, or at the appropriate staff position in the five line staff).
Thank you very much. I had to take a couple of extra steps that I will note for anyone else needing this to work.
- Ensure the percussion map is set to NP Orchestral Percussion (Library>Percussion Maps>)
- Change the playback template (Play>Playback Template>NotePerformer) choose apply and close. Do this even if NP is already selected.
- Enter a few notes in any staff (for me this activated the playback sounds)
Should be good to go from there for NP percussion input/output.
