Notes Drop/Don't Playback

I regularly have been having issues with Dorico playing back my projects. In general, everything works fine but there are certain points in my projects where longer notes will either drop out or just not play at all. I’ve tried out suggestions that I could find here (i.e, increasing buffer size in Device Setup, changing the Playback Template) but nothing seems to fix the issue so far.

Here’s an example.

Note Drops Example.dorico (890.1 KB)

Edit - In the example above it will sometimes play correctly, but if I play it back several times it frequently won’t work correctly. In my full project it seems to happen in the same spots more regularly.

Does anyone have any ideas to try out? Thanks in advance.

Interestingly, your described issue (which I can confirm using Halion Sonic) doesn’t occur using Note Performer PT.

With Halion Sonic Playback template, also increasing the Pre-roll before flow to 1 second (in Playback Options) doesn’t solve. There must be some problems with Halion Sonic (like a midi drop-out due to too many midi informations at the same exact time? Just thinking out loud…, as there is not much going on in your short example…)

Thanks for checking it out, Christian.

If it helps, here is the full (uncompleted, please don’t judge me!) project:

I’m actually using Atomic Big Band Horns for the brass and saxes and Halion Sonic for the rhythm section. I copied and pasted some rhythm section and the tenor sax solo from a Band-in-a-Box export, just to quickly get those into my project. I don’t think that should affect the playback, but I dunno for sure.

One more update, in case it helps. I can confirm that the same issue happens when I playback this project on my iPad Dorico app.

Hi @wilktone, thank you for the file.

I worked on the previous short example, and found that there is a CC 123 (All Notes Off) in the Bass Guitar track, if you see the Automation lanes in Key Editor. Deleting its control point at the very beginning, removes the dropout.

Here the corrected File:

Note Drops Example-CORRECTED.dorico (886.2 KB)

And here is how to delete the CC 123 from your file (from the Guitar Bass track):

@wilktone
And here I made the same correction on your bigger file:

And the corrected file:
Untitled Project 3-CORRECTED.dorico (3.0 MB)

How’d you generated the Bass Guitar track? It was imported from some other app?

Christian, you’re my hero!

Yes, I imported it from Band-in-a-Box initially and then edited it somewhat. I didn’t realize that it was taking automation from the Band-in-a-Box export, but it has always been glitchy for me and that’s probably why.

Thanks for your help!

Dave

well done on that one, Christian – it certainly helps that Dorico show all the automations used for each track when clicking on “add editor” but you still need to click on each track individually as things stand to find the culprit I myself find with imported files it’s not uncommon that there is some CC control causing problems (particularly with dynamics) which I didn’t know about.

Incidentally, I think it would be helpful if Dorico showed the most common default MIDI CC assignations in the list as most instruments tend to use them where relevant. For instance if a track had a CC120, that usually means “mute all sound” which would be pretty drastic if there by mistake!
