Hi,
Maybe more a different behaviour than an issue…
Unlike Cubase, VST Live is unable to manage Midi notes ending after the end of the clip. They won’t stop sounding. This is a bit annoying and results in an extra work that consists in manually adapting the length of all concerned clips in Cubase before exporting, or in VL after importing vlsprj files.
Cheers
Then that’s a bug, will check.
Cannot reproduce. Notes ending with clip end stop sounding. Notes reaching over clip end also stop sounding at clip end.
Do you have a step-by-step recipe, or simple sample project (with “Save Archive”?
Yes, I will send you a tiny project.
I’m wondering if a lack of memory or processor resources can result in odd behaviours while playing back Midi tracks. Sometimes, when exiting a Flex loop, the first beats after are still playing the loop section, as if there was a buffering problem…
Here’s a simple Project demonstrating the bug.
The first clip has a note from 2.1.1 to 2.4.1 and plays well.
The second clip is 1 bar long and contains a note whose end exceeds the end of the clip by 2 beats → this notes continue sounding until the position of the third (and empty) clip.
VL_NotesOffIssue.zip (64.1 KB)
Thank you, we can reproduce it and check.
Weird, because I tried exactly the same thing and it cut the note…
Fixed with the next version. Still scratching my head why it worked in my case…
Anyway thanks for helping with the project!
These held notes are one of the problems I encounter with Midi tracks playback. Quite frequently, notes on the first beat of a clip are missed, and I still have troubles with the bulk dumps that only do their job on the second pass.
The other thing is that the loading of my Project takes more than 5 minutes, though all Songs are 100% Midi and I use no VSTi. It’s all played in a Yamaha MOXF8 workstation. My Cubase projects are made of a large number of Midi containers, as I do copies or ghost copies of drums or bass patterns. Do you advise me to glue all these containers before exporting to VST Live? It would reduce the number of Midi assets, and maybe make the project loading faster… And solve the trouble with notes missed at the very start of a clip if each track contains a single clip…
Thank you so much.
To be more specific, let me give you all details about my configuration:
- Surface Pro 8, i5 11th generation, 8Gb / 1To
- Yamaha MOXF8
VST Live Project:
- 4 Setlists with 25 Songs each (Midi tracks only)
- 2 Global Stacks (vocal and guitar)
- VST plugins: Guitar Rig Pro 7, Waves Harmony, RoomWorks SE, VSTDynamics and 2 instances of StudioEQ.
Cannot at all reproduce this anymore.
Sometimes the very first note is missing once (!) after starting VST Live, stll chasing that one.
Make sure the note really starts at or after the clip start position, otherwise it will not sound.
What bulk dumps, what pass?
Again, any simple project will help identify problems.
For a test, remove all plugins. It should load in no time. If there are just MIDI data, it should be lighning fast.
Sounds not so complicated. Unless those MIDI tracks have myriads of data, it should load in almost no time - but loading plugins and their data does take time, just as much as the plugins use, there’s nothing we can do about that (unless there is a bug that loads multiple times).
Thank you for your answer.
The size of the Archive I just exported is 17Mb. The Midi folder alone weights 14,6Mb with 10,622 files.
Does it seem coherent to you?
I’m afraid this is the case. When I select a song, then open Song → Song Media Files, two things seem weird to me:
- Each file appears three times
- Though I opened an Archive made before, the path of every file is the one in use when I imported the Media Projects from Cubase at the creation of my VL project.
Here’s the path of my Project:
This is the timeline for the song Jolie Louise, where we can count 12 Midi clips:
And now the Song Media Files window, showing 36 lines, that are actually 3x the same files, with a path referring to the first version of the Project, before the creation of the Archive. As you can see, the lines 1, 13 and 25 are the same, as for lines 2, 14, 26, etc. The last line number is 36:
That means that even if I create a new Archive on a USB stick, the software will still seek files on drive Q:
What do I miss?
Have a good weekend.
I suspect the same files are used in the other Setlist Songs. Will check that those are not copied, but that check is always performed anyway.
Could you send the original project, just the .vlprj file, and the midi folder?
No problem if you don’t want to, we’ll try to test and watch out for any obstacles, thanks.
