Notes staying selected when copied

Hi! I’m getting such great help from this forum that I’m coming in with another problem straight after my previous one was solved.

This is one that’s causing much gnashing of teeth and expletives. Please bear in mind that I’m working in the score editor. It often happens that I select a musical phrase from one place in the score to copy it somewhere else, and then change the pitches of the notes that I’ve copied. This has the advantage of saving me having to re-enter the note values: all I need to do is raise or lower the pitch of the relevant notes. Now I’m sure that in previous versions of Cubase (I’m now in 12 Pro), the source notes didn’t stay selected once I’d pasted them where I wanted them. There’s no reason why they should do. But now, the source notes do stay selected, so that when I change the pitches of the target notes, the source notes move too. And every time I forget this irritating behaviour and have to go back and put the source notes back to where they should be. Isn’t there an option somewhere to stop this happening? And please don’t suggest clicking anywhere to deselect, because a) I have to remember to do that, and b) in doing so I also deselect the notes I want to move, and then have to select them all over again.

Any help with this before I blow a fuse would be much appreciated!

Steve

Does no-one have any ideas? This is a real problem, and I’m sure I never had it in earlier versions of Cubase.

Not seeing that here. Copied items are deselected.

i work in Cubase 15.30 and there is no such a problem

That’s great to know! There’s hope, then. Are you in Cubase 12? Someone has also posted that they’re in Cubase 15 and the problem doesn’t happen. I’m reluctant to upgrade, because there’ll be something else that won’t work as well as what I’ve got currently, but if you’re in Cubase 12, there must be a preference that stops copied items from remaining selected. Any idea where it is? I’ve looked, but with no success.

How do you define the position where you want to place your copied notes?

It doesn’t either with Cubase Pro 12.0.70 score editor, here. Copying, then pasting a group of notes let only the pasted ones selected : I can then change their pitch (drag&drop) without issue. The source notes are no longer selected.

So, the usual suspect : did you try to relaunch Cubase in safe mode, with the program preferences disabled ?

@Maestro: it doesn’t matter where I want to copy them. Say I want to duplicate what one instrument is playing in the lower octave. I select the notes of the instrument I want to copy, copy them, place my cursor at the same place in the staff where I want to paste them to, paste them, then - and here’s the thing - the original instrument remains selected. When I move the notes in the instrument I have copied to by using the “down” arrow on my keyboard, the first instrument moves too BUT ONLY FOR THE FIRST SEMITONAL STEP. Then it deselects, so stops moving. If I don’t watch for this weird behaviour, I find all sorts of wrong notes (i.e a semitone out above or below) in the parts I’ve copied from.

Cubic 13: thanks for this very valuable suggestion, and it’s good to know that you’re in Pro 12, so there must be a way out. Can you remind me how to restart in safe mode?

See this page. Basically, you should hold the described three keys (depending on the OS used) just after launching Cubase from desktop, this, to make the Safe Mode dialog appear.

I see.

I recommend you to use a Marco.
That’s what I do for duplicating notes.

Use the following Macro :

Here is an example of what you can achieve in the Score Editor using Macros:

Thank you. I’ve started in safe mode and what I’ve found is that if, after copying a line in one instrument, I move the cursor using shift + alt and clicking to the place where I want it to move to, the original line remains selected and I have the problem described above. If, however, the cursor is already at the right point in the score and I click on the target stave (merely to tell Cubase that is the stave I want to paste to), then the original deselects and I can paste and move on the target stave without affecting the original. So the problem seems to be connected to the shift + alt + click combination.

Thanks. I tried creating a macro on my own without any success, then tried to make the one you suggest above, which I got to work, but it was not doing what I want, i.e. it was pasting into the next bars following the selection (which could be useful in certain situations). What I am looking for is to be able to paste into another track, but I can’t get my head round the logic involved and express it in macro language.

What I am looking for is : select a range of notes - copy - deselect what has been copied - move to another track (how can I tell it which track, since it could be any of thirty or forty, and at any place in the score, not necessarily at the same cursor point as the selection is made?) - paste at the cursor point - deselect. Is this doable? Does it perhaps require two macros: one to make the selection, and the other to paste it in the right place? If so, it would be no more practical than ctrl + C followed by ctrl V, except that I would not have the problem of notes remaining selected.

Any help would be much appreciated!

You don’t use my Macro correctly.
It does exactly what you want.
As you know, pasting always takes place at the cursor position.
So if in your test, the notes were pasted to the following bar, it’s probably because your cursor was already there.

Proceed as follows with my Macro and everything should be fine:

  1. Select your notes
  2. Place the cursor using Alt+Shift+click in the score at the desired position and on any staff you want
  3. Use the key command defined for the Macro

Here is a video example:

Good luck.

Thanks very much! I’ll give it a try later today and report back!

This works! Thanks very much for your suggestions and help, and special thanks to Maestro who found me a solution!

I still don’t understand why, without this macro solution, and using ctrl+C and ctrl+V, the source notes remained selected, then moved one semitone up or down, according to which way I moved my target notes, then deselected themselves. I have been using Cubase for upwards of 30 years, and this never happened to me in any earlier version. Starting in safe mode didn’t change anything.
