Noticing issue with recording from VST

Cubase 15 ( Artist)

Issue:
Using Virtual Plugin VST can’t record sound from VST playing live jamming session, not copying over single pattern and then copying pasting it across cubase track

Testing Roland Drum Machine VST 909

Testing Grove Agent VST

Step A: Created a Track for VST (Tested with grove agent)

Step B : Created a Group Track B “Drum Bus”

  • I see the signal from VST replicated in Track created in Step B

Step C : Create a “Plain Audio” Track , After creating the audio track , I tried to assign the input to any available signal buy but I only see
“No Bus” or “Stereo In” available

Other approach I tried

I created a new Bus , Called it “My Signal to Audio Layer” , assigned audio to it from “Group Track” using “Send”

Went back to Audio track , when I go to it’s input , I don’t see option for group track “Drum Bus” or new bus I created “My Signal to Audio Layer”.

So the impact is I can’t really record the VST audio, I can hear the stuff playing nothing gets recorded

Note 1:

Originally I was testing some VST from Roland for drum machine had this issue

Tried out Grove agent VST which is quite a good drum setup

The same issue existed in both cases

Recording is not an issue when using Midi Keyboard for playing Halion

Past 2 days I have watched many Youtube videos they all suggest to record VST output to audio track which seem to work.

Note 2: For Groove Agent checking an option for capturing “Midi Data” does forces the midi input to appear , but for external VST like Roland 909 , they don’t have this feature

If you’re trying to record something with an effect on, export it back into the project with the effect active . When it comes back into the project it will have recorded the effect .

another way to do it rout the instrument via your soundcard back into the input of your soundcard and on the input channel load the effect that will record the effect .

Something like that ,there may be an easier way dunno.

The issue is strictly for Virtual Instruments , which load inside a PC, I think if I was using a hardware version of 909 I would obviously plug it in to capture the signal with audio interface

The virtual instrument in this case

  • Roland TR909 virtual instrument (Experimenting with old school sounds)
  • Grove Agent virtual instrument

I am able to drag 1 single pattern drop it on to the track , but videos online are saying you can record a live session as well but you have to route your output from VST to group track and then to audio track . In videos they do show that yes after assigning the signal to audio tract the , mix meter jumps indicating it is getting the signal routed from Grove agent

In the videos when they get to last step for routing they see options for “Bus” you create for the audio track earlier , but in my case my audio track layer is giving me no options

Technically it should offer me option of “input” signals

I don’t fully understand what you’re trying to do sorry .

No worries I am hoping some one may have used the recording option

I was following this video

“How to Record Audio and MIDI from VST Instruments in Cubase” | Q&A with Greg Ondo on youtube

**Links are not allowed on forum so had to post the title of video

This video shows , in last step you should activate the input of the “audio track” to available bus which is carrying the signal

However I am not seeing any signal in my audio track

Only because your profile’s trust level was “new user” and has only read a couple topics and been inactive for a long time since you created it.

Here’s the link, and I have manually upgraded your trust level

Thank you , now in the Tutorial video the person is showing when you get to final steps ,

You should see additional option for “Bus”, Group track which you can assign to your audio track

I added a picture for reference, the additional bus , should be for the group track

What I get in practice in Cubase 15 (Artist)

I followed the same steps , the tool is not giving me any options for group track bus

Expectation : The Routing for the Audio Track , should show you

             1- Group Track "Bus"
2- Any other custom "Bus" you may have created

So I was expecting this “Bus” name to be also present as option

Group bus as input is a Pro only feature.

Use one of the 3rd party vst recorders…for example Recorder - Audio Track/Bus Recording/Routing Plugin VST

Initially reading on earlier post I thought indeed the feature is available for Pro only however I did more searching

For now reading mixed comments about ability to pass audio signal from Group Track to Audio track

Some folks saying it is available in Cubase 15 Artist , some suggesting no it is only available in Pro

I am leaning toward a product glitch

Found some place this statement

Standard Group-to-Audio Routing (Available in Artist)

Direct Routing (Pro Exclusive) (Advance feature is not)

Ability to route signal from group to audio track seems like a basic feature

It’s not available in Cubase 15 Artist.

It’s a “basic” pro feature.

Take a look at the manual and the linked thread:

Come on. How many dumb things can you find somewhere on the internet? Just because you found it somewhere (reddit?) doesn’t make it true.

I just tested it and the feature is not present in Cubase Artist. Sorry, mate. I don’t know why Steinberg decided to make this a Pro feature only but it is what it is.

Thank you for share of Manual & also reaffirming that indeed this feature is missing in Artist version of tool

Just to clarify the counter argument for feature to be present originated with online search engines and AI (Gemini) indicating that the feature is available. Sometimes the answers are returned without a clarification which version is it talking about

Since AI can be incorrect as I have found I thought value in coming to the forum and actually ask the users of the product if they have come across this hurdle.

I have not used this way of capturing Sound from VST Drum machine before so I was trying to learn , in past I have just played the drum , connected it with Midi or used pattern and repeated it across the track

I was kinda hoping the Cubase Artist would allow me to capture the Drum Machine VST sounds

However on the plus side their is Groove Agent and new Drum Machine plus Patterns which are still available so I can develop some Rhythm patterns

As stated before the issue does not exist for Midi based controllers sending signal to conventional track , these signals are captured normally
