Nuendo 13.0.20 Build 148 hangs when opening projects

Hello. My Nuendo 13 on my work computer hangs almost every time when opening a project after the OS has been booted or rebooted. The project opening always stops at the “Connecting media” phase. The only way to open projects is to kill the Nuendo instance through Task Manager and reopening the project. Then the project opens normally.

The weird thing is that my personal PC has the exact same hardware connected to it and Nuendo 13 there doesn’t hang in the same spot at all.

Hi @Toistinen84

Thanks for your report and sorry to hear about your issue. You should be able to find a so-called freezedump in Documents/Steinberg/Crashdumps. Attach it to your next post so that we can start investigating. Otherwise we’re stabbing in the dark at first I’m afraid.

Cheers,
Armand

Hello @Armand ! Unfortunately the .dmp files I have are just over the 4 MB maximum limit that’s allowed on this forum per message attachment. :face_with_monocle: Would it be possible to share the file some other way directly to you?

No issue. Send them to me via wetransfer, either by posting here or PM.

Hey @Armand ! Actually, weirdly so, the aforementioned hangs on project loading don’t seem to produce .dmp files. :face_with_monocle:

I found a Cubase 13 related post about a similar issue, and the user in that thread stated that he discovered a project-specific “defaults.xml” file that had the wrong ASIO device set in that. Does Nuendo have files like that?

Hi,

Interesting. Are you using the Generic LL Asio driver usually? You should be able to simply check in your Studio Settings what is currently configured. You don’t need to open a project for this.

Cheers,
Armand

No man, I never use Generic LL ASIO! That’s what confuses me. I should add as well: After Nuendo hangs and I’ve force-killed it through Task Manager and rebooted it, the option to either delete preferences or load current preferences appear. I choose “load current prefs” because of all my Key Commands, Plugin presets etc. and it works.

@Armand , there must be something weird going on because my Studio settings are correct. Nuendo attempts to use my Motu M card as it should. But despite that Studio setting, the app still hangs at “Connecting Media” when opening a project after booting Windows.

So does Nuendo create defaults.xml files like Cubase does?

Hi,

Generate a DMP file and share it via Dropbox or a similar service, please.

Use the Microsoft ProcDump utility to generate a DMP file, please.

  1. Please download ProcDump64 from Microsoft (~650kB) and extract the archive to a local folder on your hard disk.
  2. Run Command Prompt (cmd) as administrator (right click and select “run as administrator”)
  3. Navigate (in the Command Prompt) to the folder with the extracted procdump file.
    For example:
    cd C:\ Users \ \ Downloads \ Procdump
Note: the dmp file will be written into that folder.
  4. Launch Cubase/Nuendo. You can work as usual. At any time, change to the command prompt and start procdump, to monitor Cubase/Nuendo for unexpected behavior (see next step).
  5. Launch procdump64 via Command Prompt:

Nuendo 13:
procdump64 -e -h -t Nuendo13

The -h option will write a dmp file in case of an application hang. This might kick in too early sometimes, in case some action takes a little longer. Feel free to skip the “-h” option, if you are only up for fetching crashes.
The option -e will catch exceptions and the option -t terminations of the application.

  1. Prodump is now monitoring the Cubase/Nuendo process and will write a crash log, in case Cubase/Nuendo crashes or hangs. Perform the action that causes Cubase/Nuendo to crash and send us the generated crash dmp.

ZIP and share the DMP file via Dropbox or a similar service, please.

Hello @Armand ! I’m happy to inform you that changing Nuendo’s Processing Precision setting from 64-bit to 32-bit solved this issue for me. I’m using a bunch of 3rd party VST plugins in my projects and some of them simply don’t like the 64-bit mode.

Hi @Toistinen84 very interesting. We had not thought about this beforehand. I will inform the relevant people about it.

Same here, but 32/64bit changing not working for me;(

Same issue here.
None of the above tips work. Every time the project loads for the first time, it freezes. Killing the task and reopening the project usually works fine. What’s going on? I can’t work like this. I have a lot of projects, and this is getting exhausting!!!
