Nuendo 13 Dolby 5.1

Hello, everyone,

I’ve just switched from protools to nuendo 13.
For audio post production it’s frankly better and I’m very happy!

I have a beginner’s question…
For 5.1 mixes for TV, cinema etc, should I use Authoring for Dolby Atmos and choose the 5.1 format?

Thank you very much!
Jo

My 5.1 mixes for TV don’t involve Atmos at all, or Dolby. Do you need Atmos delivery? Or even Dolby encoding?

Just Dolby encoder.

Thanks Mattias

So there’s no Dolby encoder in Nuendo, or indeed in most software. These days Dolby wants you to buy their own encoder if you want to make AC3 or AC4 files. You make a 5.1 channel WAV in Nuendo, and then feed it to an encoder.

The Atmos “encoder” it for making the special Atmos master files, that would then be fed in to an encoder, it isn’t for making 5.1 AC3 files.

Hi Sycraft-w

I’ll continue to do as I’ve always done with protools.

As I saw in the Nuendo Atmos settings, there are various settings including 5.1, 7.1 etc. I thought there might be some added value.

In the end I don’t even need Dolby, everything goes to DCP.

Thank you very much for your help.

Matter of taste.

Some prefer to work in Atmos all the time, and then just render a 5.1 or 7.1 downmix from it when this is the deliverable.
There is some voodo juice in there as well. So the downmixes sound really good.

Other than that, you can just work in 5.1 and output 5.1 from a normal 5.1 output bus if you like.
Remember to make a stem system from groups and busses, so you can export all deliverables in one go!

Thanks psvennevig!!!

I come from protools, I’ve been doing it in nuendo the traditional way and it works perfectly.
I’m going to try Atmos even in 5 and 7.1 format, I’m going to make a dcp and test it in the movie theater.
I’ll let you know if I feel any voodo when I use Atmos.

Cheers

For 5.1 I work not with Atmos. For a DCP just export 6 separate mono files named correctly. NO interleaved WAV.

Why on earth do you say that?
We have been using and preferring 5.1 or 7.1 interleaved bwavs for years for our mastering!

And, working in Atmos with a constant 5.1 or 7.1 downmix, actually works fine.

I have my own theory why it works so good. But that is for another thread after discussing with @Fredo and @ErikGuldager first.

Because my customers (for example Lionsgate) want to get separate mono files. Nuendo and ProTools (and others) have different channel orders.

That’s nonsense.
The interleaved bwav’s have the wave extensible format included.
This means that within the metadata the destination of each channel is defined. When importing such a bwav into another application (not talking about shitty DIY software), the channels are automatically assigned. In other words, when importing such a interleaved bwav into protools, the channel assignment will be correct.
Same goes for the majority of DCP creators.

You are right with the metadata. Did you not read that my customers want to have separate mono files? A DCP is NOT created with ProTools. Why so rude? Be gentle.
The guy wanted to have an opinion. I Just use Dolby Atmos when use really Atmos and not 5.1. Everybody can do it as he wants.

My apologies, did not read the complete thread.

In my defense, I am getting sick and tired of educating/correcting/learning people in other businesses (read: video editors, DCP creators, etc …) how to do their job.

The fact that your clients ask for separate files isn’t the problem.
It becomes a problem when they do not know how to handle these.
And this is how their problem, becomes your problem.
(Still haven’t read the whole thread, so my apologies if I am off topic.

Best regards
