My harddrive ran out of space during a final mixing session. It doesn’t happen often but it did. I got a warning that I cannot save due to no more space. So I immediately made new space on the disk (even as permanetely delete to ensure it was really free). afterwhich I was able to save no problem the session (no more warning). So I went about my mix session. 6 hours later I got a crash. No problem I thought I’ll at least load the last 5 minute auto save. Low and behold it didn’t save crap!!! 6 hours gone. The first warning error of no disk space must have screwed something up and stopped it from auto saving. Everything appeared fine though with the session and I even copied files and did things that needed more space etc.
Steps to repo this to ensure no one has to live through this:
try to save a session with no space left,
free space back up on disk and then save again
see if auto save works again. If not I’d say this is a bug or a feature that needs to be addressed to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
Totally understand you are feeling peeved. Pointing at SB is a bit much though as “f&€ng you over” i don’t really understand. Please don’t shoot the messenger.
A. It is not deliberate
B. This kind of issues can happen for multiple reasons.
C. Best thing to do is reboot after these kind of messages. An OS needs time to fix things in the background and daws can be very demanding.
I’ve had this happen in all my daws and apps one time or another.. i’ve learned to not trust them or the OS.
this is not to say this is nothing else than unfortunate and i get the need to vent the frustration, but (sorry here it comes) you have learned not to trust the system blindly.
It wasn’t full originally - come on- we run professional session all the time and use smaller SSD’s to run our session and backup on HDDs- I’m trying to help others avoid the issue. If Nuendo continues to run fine and even saves a session this issue should not have happened
Its easier to have 2020 hindsight- This is still considered a bug to me since Nuendo saved the session after freeing space and continued to operate like normal, even with moving new files into the drive/session etc (which would have not been possible if empty) etc.
Trust me I’ve learned alot over the years not to trust the system/OS included for many reason, Nuendo especially and others that I still have old habits to make sure things don’t go screwy. I’m trying to list this here yes because of fustration (losing 6 hours of work in a rush deadline is no fun) but to help avoid it happening if someone lands in the same situation to take percausion. I’ll take it out with the devs directly otherwise.
Well it seems Steinberg’s beta testers haven’t been coming across much lately. =P
While I agree that letting a drive fill up while working is not a good practice, it can happen to anyone (except Norbury_Brook of course). In my opinion, if Autosave can’t save a valid file for ANY reason it should prompt a warning telling you so. It is a a safety feature after all, so it should check that the file is created and is valid. Just having a passive autosave that can be creating corrupt files (or no files at all) with no way of knowing that until you need to access them is not a good practice either.
Thanks Henrique I agree. I know this situation is not ideal, but sometimes with real tight deadlines and large project files that can add up quick it can happen to the best of us even those that are well organized and do their best to avoid itetc. Example: here are a bunch of new VFX shots to drop in- no time to convert a new file and need to spot check etc - dam those files were like 100gigs just on their own plus new large HD renders from color, some music changes coming in etc etc..
yeah I’ve seen this behavior as well and one of those habits I had to develop was copying the auto save files into a new folder in case I needed to quit the session.
Because people get tired, get confused, misread stuff, forget stuff, people make mistakes.
It is the job of the computers and softwares to help us make less mistakes, or at least make them less severe and easier to correct. Not to punish us for our mistakes just cause we are not supposed to make them.
Whatever the reason a person may have to let the disk get full, Nuendo should not go about failing to autosave without a warning.
Okay there. I see that you do primarly music, Its lot easier to operate the way you talk about in that world. I;ve worked in both. The kind of session i’m talking about is likely not at all what you think or situation you think of, as you cant forsee exactly how much space you will need. Your messages are not productive in any way to this situation. I guess just let the other amateurs you call experience this issue.
