sometimes calculating a part’s bpm is a simple task, yes. But often you’d be working in a less than ideal context which has multiple tempo fluctuations and quite a variety of beat types - and rarely - even the occasional odd meters, etc.
In such cases nothing appears simple anymore. This is probably why electronic musician Alice Byno made herself a context sensitive Cubase macro, and this one looks really nicely done:
