I am not sure why this line split into two when I uploaded into my Dorico 5.0 from a Dorico 4.0 file? I found Library-Layout Options-Staves & Systems-Casting Off- Fixed number of bars per system. Changed to 6 (how the lines of page 1 of this hymn are situated) and hit “apply” but nothing happened?
Check whether there are any System Breaks (turn on Signposts).
Also, those manual adjustments to the Note Spacing might be having an effect.
Are the total number of bars in the hymn divisible by 6?
For something like a hymnal, I’d actually suggest not setting a fixed number of bars in Layout Options. Just use a Note Spacing value (also in Layout Options > Note Spacing) that suits, and then add System Breaks where necessary.
There’s no System breaks in this last portion. The number of measures doesn’t divide by 6 evenly - actually this last line should have 8 measures. So maybe that’s my question: how do I have one line with more measures than all the rest?
Difficult to say without seeing the file, but in some circumstances, Dorico does make the penultimate system light, in order to give the final system a better fit.
As said, I’d add System Breaks.
Select all those red little boxes and type “delete”.
This might already solve your case.
“System breaks are automatically inserted at the start/end of each system in which you adjusted note spacing.”
See:
Adjusting note spacing at individual rhythmic positions
By adjusting the note spacing, “all those red little boxes” that @k_b mentioned, two systems brakes were surely created, one at the begining and one at the end of the system. make the signpost visibles, and you should see them.
No, these red boxes are a sign for manually having moved the (in this case) horizontal placement of the bar lines and note columns.
If you apply a manual Note Spacing Change, there will be no red boxes.
please note that I was not talking about “Note Spacing Changes” but “adjusting note spacing at individual rhytmic positions”
anyway, I think the OP would be in the way to solve the problem by following your recomendation in post 5.
Yes of course Rafael, your description is correct, but we try to solve rschrock’s problem from his/her initial post:
I don’t think these horizontal edits were intentional, may be a habit from another software.
Thanks to all who gave advice - working with the System breaks did the trick!
