Numbering repeated measures (NOT using 1-bar repeat symbol)

[New Finale to Dorico convert here - sorry if this is an overly simplistic question!]

I have some long tied notes, and I want to put numbers in parentheses above the notes to help the players keep track of where they are. How do I do this?

Basically: select the bars you want it to appear above, open the Repeats popover (Shift+R) and enter num.

Thanks for your answer. I followed your instructions and created a region. Do you have any idea why the numbers aren’t showing? Or why the region disappears when I click elsewhere?

In score view it seems to do nothing:

But when you view the part @DanielMuzMurray’s suggestion will produce:

I’m not in front of my computer to check the exact location, but there is a Layout Option to control visibility of these. IIRC they are turned off in score layouts and on in part layouts by default, but you can of course change that if you want them in the score too.

You recall correctly, @FredGUnn. :+1:t3: If you really need that info to show in the score as well, @Greg_Scheer:

Thanks, everyone! Indeed, the setting was under Players/Numbered Bar Regions. Just a few notes for posterity:

  • Like all Layout Options, numbered bar regions can be set for any combination of score and parts. I chose to show this in the cello part but not the score.
  • In the Properties Panel, you can set the count frequency. I chose every 4 bars.
  • Also in the Properties Panel is the option of showing the range. I thought “1 (-24)” looked overly fussy, so I toggled off that feature, leaving only the count every four bars.

You can also specify your defaults for these in Engraving Options / Bar Repeats / Numbered Bar Regions, then you don’t have to do them individually in Properties.
