Obtaining a good quality sound from BBCSO PRO Violin 1 Leader

Jordan The problems you are describing sound more hardware related.

Maybe just a RAM increase would get rid of all problems. for the present Macs that is impossible but for Windows PCs it is often not too complicated.

Before I had my M1Max MacBook, I upgraded my old iMac to 32 GB and also replaced the harddisk with an OWC ssd and it still works perfectly with BBCSO. With Macs you just have operating system restrictions and you cannot always run the latest DAW and Dorico versions but even for that there are solutions if the Mac is not very old.

I have the BBC Core, not the Pro version so can’t directly compare the solo strings. However, it sounds very much as if you are simply playing using the default ā€œlongā€ patch. This is a mistake as I very quickly learned with this library as that is only suitable for long sustained chords and you can’t possibly get any kind of real phrasing using this patch. You should be using the legato patch for general playing of a passage like this and imho, should change the supplied Expression Map as I have done so that ā€œnaturalā€ (the default sound) also uses the legato patch. Try that and you ought to find the results are a good deal better, though the fact remains, as others have pointed out, that these ā€œfirst chairā€ players are only designed for occasional solos within an orchestral context and not for dedicated chamber writing if that’s what you’re hoping for (Spitfire have for instance the Sacconi library for that and that are plenty of alternatives elsewhere)

Thank you so much dko22, it was exactly that. I updated the expression map for the ā€œnatural (softer)ā€ expression , replacing the keyswitch of c#-1, which triggered the Long patch with c-1 which now triggers the Legato patch (identical to the ā€œnatural (legato)ā€ expression). I appreciate your providing this advice which has given me added hope that it may well be worthwhile holding out with this steep learning curve I have in order to obtain a better sound with my scores in Dorico.

Delighted you’re making progress! To be honest, it’s easiest to get good results with the BBCSO when it’s run through the NotePerformer playback engine but unfortunately that option has now been withdrawn. I myself now like the Spitfire Symphony Orchestra even more than the BBCSO though that has its own learning curve.

Hi Mavros, regarding the popping problem I have with BBCSO Pro with a symphony size score, I believe it is a CPU related constraint. I have tried many things but none resolve the the problem of CPU cores peaking at certain times when many instruments are playing. I have 64 GB memory, Intel I7 CPU and 4 TB SSD drive. I don’t believe it is a RAM or disk problem (it is true I have only 1 disk drive.. but I’m not sure that is the culprit).

Hi mducharme, I believe the popping is due to the CPU… I have tried many things without success. To test what you are suggesting would require me to put the sound library on an external SSD and apparently this requires lots of changes that I don’t yet have the courage to make. Thanks for the suggestion.
