Odd Condensing Behavior

Hi all,

I have an odd behavior with condensing. All of the dynamics are copied exactly in each of these parts (2 clarinets) and yet when condensed, I’m getting a duplicate/overlapping crescendo and a weird, tiny/thin cresc. at the end of the bar. In these screenshots, I’m showing the two bassoon parts below for context. Any idea what’s causing this?

When reporting Condensing issues, it’s always best to attach your project with any relevant bars.

The first bassoon is at least missing the “p” -marking of the second bassoon. That will probably prevent the bassoon dynamics from condensing.

To fix those issues, usually a good workflow is to quickly rewrite the slurs and dynamics to make sure they are identical.

The issue is with the Clarinets condensing, not the Bassoons.

No, the clarinets looked fine to me

Really?

Condensing problems are very difficult to diagnose as they are so context-dependent. You’ll really need to attach a file, cut down if needed to the bare minimum that reproduces the problem, to get more help.

Most likely these dynamics are grouped differently which usually causes these visual problems. So check with which dynamics before or after this passage they are grouped with and make sure that the grouped dynamic … erm… groups are identical.

I have a wild guess: It looks as if the crescendo hairpin in one of the Clarinets is much longer than it appears in the first screenshot, and its display is truncated by the other dynamics. How else would you get that vestigial hairpin on the last eighth rest in the second screenshot?

I unlinked these clarinet dynamics from all else, and then copied one to the other, and it had the same result with the weird overlap and that phantom mini cresc. at the end. I found a fix: I had to copy and paste one clarinet dynamic to the other, and then select both individually and “unlink element” for BOTH of them. That resulted in normal condensing (despite the dynamics text not aligning). Any idea why this is the case? Seems like I shouldn’t have to unlink every dynamic for the condensing to work properly.

At this level of detail, impossible to determine without inspecting a cut-down project.

And also note that there is a difference between linking (vertically) and grouping (horizontally) dynamics.
