Odd instrument renaming: violincelle

I added cello to a score and it is now spelled “violoncello.” Is that something I accidentally did sometime? Am I missing something? And how might I fix it completely?

It’s a long time since I played the cello, but that’s the correct French spelling, isn’t it?

Yes, it is. Was the music xml file I opened set to French?

It could be that Library > Engraving Options > Language > Staff Labels is set to French, perhaps.

It was. Thank you kindly @pianoleo ! Does it change when you open files with that saved or must I have changed it unknowingly?

Engraving Options are project-specific.
I’m not sure whether you’ve saved the Language for Staff Labels as default, or if it’s something that’s baked into the MusicXML file you imported.

What happens if you go File > New and add a cello? Do you get a Violoncello or a Violoncelle? If Violoncello, the Language is baked into the MusicXML. If Violoncelle, you’ve knowingly or unknowingly set French as the default language for staff labels.

To replace the staff labels language for future projects:

  1. Set Library > Engraving Options > Language > Staff Labels to whatever you like.
  2. Click the Apply button in the bottom right.
  3. Click the Save As Default button in the bottom left.
  4. Close Engraving Options.

Looks like it was baked into the file because my defaults are still English. Thank you.
