One For AI lovers and Conspiracy Theorists Everywhere

Good points though I would mention a “criminal” is someone who knowingly breaks the law, that’s baked into the word itself, unlike something like “escapee” or “intruder,” which describes the act without claiming anything about the mind behind it. So ironically, choosing that specific noun does kinda smuggle in exactly the ill-intent judgment your own argument says is irrelevant.

?

It’s not baked into the word. I just checked 6 dictionaries and only in one did it include one definition implying that. In all other cases a “criminal” is someone that commits or have been convicted of having committed a crime.

Not really that ironic. The analogy isn’t about the intent or benevolence / malevolence of the agent.

I meant that exactly as I wrote it. Most humans would balk at the example that exists if they learned about it, since it shows the absolute depravity and immorality of those making the decision. It is inconceivable that it would be the case yet it is true.

Sure, but it’s still a word whose most common real-world referents are intentional actors, so using it for something explicitly agreed to have no intent at all is still a slightly awkward fit IMO. “Criminal” as a word choice still risks implying culpability to a reader/listener because that’s the connotation most people carry, regardless of the strict definition.

I think you missed the meaning behing my “?”. I was curious about what exactly you were referring to by: “I’ll just point out that recently humans made similar decisions,”

I was referring to: “Eliminating all subjects eliminates all disease.”

When I wrote “similar” I meant that humans have made decisions where you have a problem that affects a group of people, and eliminating those people solves the problem with them, despite them being “your” people that you would normally protect. I can’t get more specific than that.

Fascinating how fast news appear about AI escaping their cage

A cynic might suspect such stories discourage local use in favor of “trusted” cloud-hosted services, which need to start showing massive revenue increases real soon.

Said a guy who uses AI. Therefore will defend the thing that serves him. Cause typing prompts is 2% easier than turning knobs and listening.

This is why we’re cooked. Everyone is bribed. Either someone is making money off of using or promoting AI, or they don’t want to even risk their cushy jobs. So the ruling class is using the capital they obtained from the middle class to bribe the middle class into degrading itself down to the working class. Back to hunger-games style kingdoms and serfdom. 2030 = own nothing and be happy.

And the love of money is *still the root of all evil.

Good grief! That went very bleak rather quickly.

"AI"is just a marketing term. Machine learning is a tool.

A sampler is a tool, like any other. A guitar is a tool, like any other.
Is turning knobs and listening easier than learning to actually play an instrument?
We should feel free to use any or all of them appropriately , as we see fit.

It’s a long stretch of the imagination to go from someone making use of a tool, to the end of civilization.

@ASUNDER
That reminds me of Suno’s latest efforts to reach out to independent artists and lure them into a diabolical contract.
Artists falling for that basically sell their souls to Suno. They are giving up their rights and they have to agree to a “Good Vibes Only” clause that they are never to speak ill about Suno once they realize how much they’ve been screwed over.

That definetly has a Faustian quality to it.
And yes, the implications of AI on music and culture in general are bleak.

I’m not the one who did this to the world. It’s bleak alright.

Then a tank is also a tool. It can transport people and go over rough terrain.

*instrument. An AI bot is NOT a musician!

Same technology, made by the same companies, that share the tech with each other. And the love of money is the root of all evil. In any industry, including music.

@MrSoundman
It’s about the bigger picture here. AI has to be aligned with a set of ethical and moral standards. On all fronts, not just music.

Since I started this, I’m going to post this.

It comes as no surprise me that you would immediately stoop to an ad hominm rather than address anything I actually argued. It doesn’t matter for the purposes of evaluating the points whether I use AI or not; a claim stands or falls on its own merits, not on who’s making it.

“Typing prompts is 2% easier than turning knobs”: So if turning knobs is 100% effort and prompting is 2% easier you’re therefore saying it’s 98% effort? You appear confused. And, if this is actually a jab at my music production process then you are seriously mistaken. Apart from being highly offensive, it’s not even an argument. Just for the record. I’ve been composing, producing and mixing for myself and numerous clients for decades, long before AI was even thought of.

You said ‘recently’ , that word implies a specific, identifiable, real event they you presumably had in mind. Just wondered what specific decision, event, or policy you are talking about? A ‘pattern’ description isn’t an example.

Ok, and? What’s your point? Did you get what my point was?

Giving you one or more examples of what I’m talking about would get the thread locked, so it is what it is. Humans suck, AI learns from and/or is programmed by humans. We can expect that there is a non-zero risk that the outcome of its behavior is equally bad or much, much worse in magnitude.

AI learns from and is built by humans, so the risk of it inheriting those failings isn’t zero. OK, Agreed… and I’m not going to pretend “non-zero” means trivial, plenty of non-zero risks are worth taking seriously.

Where it’d help to go further I guess is scale and mitigation: how large is this risk actually likely to be, and what specifically needs to be hard-coded against it. That it could happen seems clear enough already, and perhaps the harder and more useful question is how big a risk it is and what’s already being done to limit it.

That is insane news, actually. I wonder if there will be any real-world implications from the AI escaping into the internet. Perhaps wipe out my debt??? #ISupportAI

I am going to assume you mean “hard-coded software”.
Looking at all the professional software that is chock-a-block with bugs, I don’t hold out much hope.

I believe, (may be wrong), that actual robots make our cars these days, not just arms, but bipedal machines. If they’re not imbued with AI, it won’t be long.
I also heard Mr Musk shut down a factory or two and retooled them to build robots. AI imbued?
(Paywalled link)

And governments, especially China and the UK are licking their chops with all the opportunities AI opens up for them.

Just some random thoughts.

Opportunities? China already leading the world… by a significant margin it would seem - e.g.:
