Ongoing doubts about my installation

Hi as some of you may be aware I’ve had a few queries since joining Dorico almost 2 years ago. The installation on my laptop has never felt as if it was operating properly, various features (eg pressing the full stop key to create dotted notes) has seldom worked and it’s really added to the learning load I’ve had to undertake.

For various reasons I decided to install Dorico on an older Windows 10 desktop machine and while it took an unbelievably long time to download all the elements it’s now up and running and, lo and behold, so far it’s running as I thought it should, which means that note entry has rapidly sped up for me.

So the query is: was my initial installation corrupted in some way (and can it be fixed with a reinstall?) or is it a windows related issue in some way?

This old desktop is unlikely to live for long and can’t be upgraded to Win11 whatever happens but I’m honestly overjoyed that suddenly I am now making rapid progress on creating scores. I just need to have a forward plan for what happens when this machine dies, as I fear it wil fairly soon.

All contributions welcome!

Reinstalling isn’t always the panacea that it’s thought to be.
(“I’ve reinstalled it four times and it still doesn’t work! How many more times must I reinstall it?”)

You can certain try reinstalling; but if that doesn’t fix it, then you know the issue is somewhere else, other than the installation itself.

In general, things are either installed, or they’re not. If the app loads, then it’s not “bad” or “incomplete” in some way. (Though of course Dorico has lots of supplementary files, like fonts, VSTs, and sample instruments; but these are all separate things.)

Problems are much more likely to be issues of configuration. This could be audio driver setup (particularly on Windows); user settings, such as key shortcuts (which might explain why full stop didn’t work); or even the interaction of other apps and the OS.

As ever, if you’re experiencing problems such as freezing, then create a Diagnostic Report from the Help menu and upload it here. Provide as much detail about exactly what you were doing, what happened, and what didn’t happen when you did it. (Also: how long did you wait while it was frozen? Did it recover by itself, or did you have to kill the frozen app?)
