Open a tab with strings section

Hi, I’m quite new in Dorico and can’t find it. I’m with an orchestral work and I’d like to open a new tab with only the strings section, or the strings plus oboe… I suppose it can be done, but I only find the way to open a tab with a single instrument. How should I do this? If it’s not possible, I’d suggest to add this feature, would be great!

You might want to see if Instrument filters works for you:

That’s nice! I’d prefer to have tabs opened instead of filters but this solution covers my needs.

Thanks so much for your help, arco

You can open a new tab by right-clicking in the tab bar and selecting the layout you want in the tab. You can then use the instrument filters in that tab. Also, you can open new windows via the menu: Windows → New Window, if you want multiple windows on multiple monitors.

You can create as many layouts as you need, and assign whatever players you like to those layouts.

So you could have an “all strings” layout, to which you assign the Violin, Viola, Cello, and Contrabass players.

Thanks sjanssens, maybe I do somwthing wrong but I only see the filters in the full score tab

Hi Lillie, thanks, I did not know abut layouts, I’ll check the help web as it seems a very good solution also

You can create two full score tabs and set different filters in each (note the filters are only available in Galley View, not Page View)

Winds…

Strings…

Be aware that layouts and filtering are different solutions to different needs. Dorico separates the music information from the idea of paper. When you’re in galley mode you see all the music without any consideration of paper. When you create a layout, you’re describing how the music goes on paper. This is why layouts have paper size as a property. You can make a full score layout for 8.5x11 (or A4) paper as well as a layout for 9x12 (or A3) paper. If you wanted to print a version of your score with just the strings you would need a layout containing only string players. (Parts are simply layouts with only one player/section.)

Filtering is used in situations where you don’t want or need various layouts, you just want to clear away the clutter of players you’re not currently working with.
