I’d like to be able to open the midi editor without having to create a part first.
Just double click in the pace on the instrument/midi track where I want to edit and the editor opens.
Hi,
Technically, the editors are based on the MIDI Parts, not tracks in Cubase.
Thanks Martin - could the part not be created based on what I’ve done in the midi editor? So it would open to just a blank piano roll, but if I (for instance) painted in a few midi notes it would automatically create part for it?
Hi,
What would be the ledft-right boundaries of the non-existing (virtual) MIDI Part in the Key Editor? How would you name it? How would you show it in the list of the MIDI Parts?
That’s for the developers to figure out, isn’t it? I mean, if a customer has a feature-request they should not have to also come up with the full implementation for it as well.
What @smapmap probably doesn’t realize is that their request would require a major re-design of the architecture of Cubase but as a feature-request it is valid nonetheless.
Cubase shows us a list of the MIDI Parts??? I mean it is obvious that such a list must exist in the computer’s memory somewhere but I wasn’t aware it is displayed to the user in a list format.
And BTW - an answer to all of your above questions would be to create a temporary MIDI Part in the memory. Boundaries on the clicked position, length = 0. It gets expanded automatically as events are drawn or recorded. Just an idea.
Hi,
I’m not asking as a developer (because Im not Cubase developer). And it’s not question for the developers, it’s a questino for the Produc Owner.
Anyway, the user requests a feature and he has an idea, how exactly to use it. Therefore I’m asking the user about some details. Because a wrong decision might ruin the users use case.

I totally agree with both of your statements.

Cubase shows us a list of the MIDI Parts???
Yes. In the Key Editor, you can see the list of selected MIDI Parts.

This is against the MIDI Parts boundaries philosophy in Cubase. You can have MIDI data out of the MIDI Parts boundaries and they behave specific (and specified) way. Cubase doesn’t extend the MIDI Part automatically, if you draw a MIDI Event out of the MIDI Parts boundaries.
Why not alt+click an empty area to draw a new part? It takes a few milliseconds to open the editor this way.
Actually you can pretty much do this right now
- Set the Locators to where you want the new Part
- On an Instrument Track double+click twice (i.e. 4 clicks total) between the Locators
