Opening a project created by Cubase 15 Pro - but in 10.5? or 12?

Hi there everyone,

I’m in the process of handing off a Cubase project to the next party for continued work. I am running Cubase 15 Pro, and the next two folks are running 10.5 Pro and 12 Pro. They’ve received the project via a Dropbox upload, and lo and behold they cannot open it. They get an “Invalid Project File” error.

In the past I’ve had no issue handing off projects to older Cubase versions despite a couple of hiccups. But they almost always opened, and never threw this error. Just to double check I downloaded the project myself from the Dropbox and tried to open it… and it opened without issue, so I know the file is not corrupted (which was my first guess).

I also tried opening on both Mac and PC, though we all 3 are using Macs. It worked on both (via Cubase 15).

Any thoughts as to what might be happening here? Cubase really doesn’t go in to detail when it throws this error.

Newly made projects in Cubase versions 14 and newer are by default saved in a new file format that can’t be opened by Cubase versions older than Cubase 13.

Files that were started in older Cubase versions can be worked on in Cubase 15 and saved and won’t get converted and can be reopened again in the older Cubase versions after (they shouldn’t get converted to the newer format), but that probably doesn’t help you.
