Opposite direction on note input

This question is so basic it’s embarrassing, but I can’t find the answer in the manual, with the help of AI or through trial and error with every key combination I can think.

For reference, I am using a Mac, and of course I’m on the latest version of Dorico and macOS.

The default fo Dorico on Note from a computer keyboard is to insert the note that is nearest. So if I’ve entered F, if I enter A, I get a third above. But I can’t figure out what to type to make it give me F a sixth below. Or vice-versa if (for instance) D is the next note.

I know this is possible because I saw it in a tutorial two or three months ago.

The stuff I enter typically goes either direction constantly. I’ve just gotten used to backing up the carat and typing Cmd+Option+Arrow (up or down).

A simple answer will do. Possibly also a manual reference. (I apparently don’t know what to search for.)

Humble thanks.

I think that the note will always be entered below the current note, if you hold down Ctrl.

In this particular case: Ctrl-A

To make the note always entered above the current note, hold down Shift-Option.

In this particular case: Shift-Option-A

Welcome to the forum, @PeterThomsen!

Ctrl+note is valid on Mac, but on Windows it’s Ctrl+Alt+note.

From the manual:

This is exactly the information I was looking for. Isn’t it great that of all the permutations and combinations of keystrokes, I tried every possible one except the one that works.

Now I need to internalize it.

This problem is solved. Thank you.

Of course.
