Optimizing windows XP

I have Cubase 4 installed and a 9652 Card on 32 bit XP, SP1. The computer is dedicated solely for recording, and nothing else. I’ve been using it for a few years now without problems except I get dropouts and distortion if I select drop down lists while cubase is in playback mode.

Is there some information available as to what windows services can be disabled, and what settings that can be adjusted for optimum performance?
