Option to Use macOS System Default Audio Output Automatically

Hi everyone,

I’m using Dorico on a MacBook both on the go and in a stationary setup with an Apple Display.

One thing that regularly interrupts my workflow is audio device switching. Most macOS applications automatically follow the system’s current default audio output — for example switching seamlessly between the MacBook speakers and an external display or audio interface when connected or disconnected.

In Dorico, however, the audio device has to be selected manually each time the setup changes. This becomes inconvenient when frequently moving between mobile and desktop use.

Would it be possible to add an option such as:

“Use System Default Audio Output”

instead of binding playback to one specific hardware device?

I think this would greatly improve usability for users working with changing hardware setups on macOS.

While I agree that a “follow system setting” option would be a nice feature, most audio apps have their own settings for audio input and output, independent of the system setting. E.g. Finale, MuseScore, Logic, Cubase, Audacity, Sound Studio, etc, etc.

As jesele suggests, you might want to try creating a Multi-output or Aggregate device in MacOS’s Audio MIDI Setup.app. This makes a ‘virtual’ output that comprises two or more physical devices. So Dorico sends to the virtual device, and if your Mac is connected to the Studio Display, then those speakers are included in the virtual device. If the speakers aren’t available, the virtual device sends to whatever else is in its list.
