Orchestral Tools have released a free version of their [Berlin Orchestra](https://www.orchestraltools.com/berlin-free-orchestra) samples, available when you download their SINE Player and create an account.

I’ve made a simple Playback Template for it.

[Berlin Free Orchestra.dorico\_pt.zip](https://forums.steinberg.net/uploads/short-url/usFcR0CtClbhd2QZ3lQomySDg8G.zip) (35.3 KB)

I haven’t done the Drums, Cymbals or Percussion instruments yet. I have done the Timpani, glockenspiels, xylophones, etc.

It doesn’t seem very responsive to dynamics; that might need some work: either changing the curve or reining in the maxima and minima.

Bear in mind there is currently a bug that when you quit Dorico after using the SINE Player, Dorico crashes. (But, as you’re quitting anyway…)

In the comparison between offerings, the free version has “Up to 2” dynamic layers. Presumably, some (many?) only have 1.

Hmm… I find it behaves quite well (here on Win10). No crashes so far.

Is there any documentation available?

That just means it plays the same sound at every dynamic level, rather than having different samples which crossfade in across the range.

Not that I can see, other than the list of instruments and patches shown in the player.

Well, yes. I thought that’s what you meant by “not responsive”.

Thank You for sharing this! Musescore doesn’t have the formatting capabilities of Dorico, and its playback engine does need work yet, but the fact that they have so many inexpensive vst libraries from ‘big’ names, and you can also use your existing vst libraries, is a great thing. I have Orchestral Tools’ _Berlin Brass_ and _Berlin Soloists_ for Musescore, and they sound good. I hope _this_ offering by Orchestral Tools opens the door for other companies to offer low-cost but decent-sounding libraries for non-DAW notation playback.
Here is an arrangement of “I Wonder as I Wander” for WW Quintet I did a while back. The sounds are all from the new, free, Orchestral Tools Sine Player Library (with benwiggy’s playback template):

@benwiggy Here are the percussion maps, that you can blend with your expression maps and template. I think they are accurate.

I also made a template for all the instruments, but it requires VEP. However, I think it makes more sense to have the BFO instruments directly inserted in Dorico, being conceived for very quick load and configuration.
