Orchestration Challenge: "Shadow Town" (Free Score Available)

I posted this over on vi-control.net but thought I’d share this here as well (since I’m a major Dorico fan) in case anyone is interested…

Attached is a score for a somewhat “spooky” piece I composed back in 2000 (originally for piano) that has a bit of a Bernard Hermann vibe to it. I spent a few hours over the last couple of days orchestrating it for fun. However, I’d be really interested to hear other people’s orchestrations of this same piece (for anyone interested). If you have time and want to give it a shot, please do and then upload your audio mockup (and/or score) on this thread to share with everyone. I’d love to hear what you come up with!

Here’s my version…

For anyone concerned about copyright issues for this song, I give you full permission to make new arrangements/orchestrations of this song and create recordings of them. Consider this an “open source” score.

Have fun and hope you enjoy the process!

NOTE: The original PDF attached was actually made in Finale97 (old school!) so I had to dump to MusicXML and then import into Dorico. I did a bit of cleanup on it before saving as a Dorico file.

Aside from a few artifacts, this is a quality mockup – many moments where I thought: “This sounds incredibly like a real orchestra”. Interesting piece, thanks for sharing.

(It would be nice to see also your score, if possible.)

Glad you enjoyed this piece! I have to do some editing on the orchestral score still but once it’s ready I’ll post a link to it here for anyone interested in having a look.
