Dear all, I want to write an extra (ossia) stave above the drum set because the rhythm he is playing is very constant, while the trumpet plays something loose above it (like G. Ligeti’s Musica Ricercata VII). I want him to read along the Trumpet Voice, to know when the melody is ending, so he can play the next part. However, Dorico doesn’t allow me to insert a new stave for drums… How can I do that?
Maybe you could add the trumpet to the layout of the drums and scale down the trumpet stave. This would be my solution.
But perhaps there is something more clever?
Thank you for your answer. I don’t quite understand why it’s not possible to add an additional ossia staff for drums. There could be cases where you want to notate a different rhythmic pattern to be played. Any ideas?
Drums, like any kit instrument, are not a normal instrument. Instead a kit is something akin to a condensed staff, but with many more separate instruments than a typical condensed staff and different as well in that one can actually add and change notes in the kit, while actual condensed staves cannot be altered directly.
Presumably the hybrid structure of a drum set (kit) is what prevents one from adding an ossia as you wish. Perhaps in the future this capability, as well as certain greater flexibility for condensed staves in general may appear. We’ll just have to wait and see.
