Output channel routing doesn't work - Always sends to 1-2

Output channel assignment doesn’t work. I’ve tried 3 different interfaces. No matter what output channel assignments I choose, audio is always sent to 1-2. Mono assignents do absolutely nothing, neither do any of the surround outputs. Only L/R work and always gets sent to the device channel 1-2. VERY frustrating. Please advise

I opened a Steinberg support ticket on April 10th - 14 days with no response. Is this normal for Steinberg?

I’m afraid it is. I have waited 3-4 weeks for response.

When I have had 5.1 files open in SpectraLayers I have been able to route to other device channels. Sequoia here to, Apollo x8p interface.

30 days later I got a response from Steinberg support. Apparently, SL (on macOS) can only use audio routing that is selected as the system settings? What if I want to use another core audio device, configured just for SL?

1. Set the Output at System Level (macOS)
First, make sure macOS is using the correct output device:

  • Go to System Settings → Sound

  • Select your desired output device (e.g., audio interface, headphones, etc.)

This is important because SpectraLayers uses the system audio devices.

Then you select that other core audio device in System Settings → Sound on your Mac before you start SpectraLayers.

Spectralayers can see ALL of my audio hardware, including core audio routers like Pro Tools Audio Bridge and Ginger Audio Sphere in it’s own audio settings - the drop down menus. It even allows me to select them, making it appear like theyre available and being used, but then it IGNORES the selection and invisibly stays tied to the system settings? This is really the way it works?

I can’t think of any other pro audio application that forces you to change the system settings in order to select an audio device. Surely, I’m misunderstanding something here?!?

SL is an ingenious concept, but still in a kind of unstable mockup beta state and like a plethora of bugs… after so many years. Parts of the codebase is outdated and fundamental datastructures have to be rewritten, imho. This is costly and takes some time and money to do it properly.
(I know this sounds harsh, but that’s my opinion after using it for some years now.)

The hardware routing situation is truly bizarre…SL can see all of the audio devices and select them, but doesn’t actually send audio to one you select! What an astoundingly stupid, half baked application.

I’ll tell you what else is costly…Spectralayers!

I agree about the beta vibe. The UI looks like 2005ish. Great sounding processing but, incredibly non-intuitive. And 30 days to hear back from support, just to have them cut and paste from the user manual. I thought Avid was bad, but Steinberg wins this round. What a mess!
