I hope I’m posting in the right section. Before focusing on Halion 7 FM Zone, I was a big Reface DX enthusiast. Let us consider a single operator (sine wave), and compare the behavior of Halion 7 and that of the Reface DX when it comes to feedback. I emphasize that I’m not aware of the feedback mathematical subtleties that may differentiate in the case of both Halion 7 and Reface DX.
On the Reface DX, we set the feedback amount for the operator. When we have chosen such an amount, it turns out that the harmonic content of the signal is now fixed. We can now vary the level of the operator or even set an envelope : it will only affect the amplitude of the signal, which harmonic content was fixed with the amount of feedback.
On Halion 7, we do the same thing : we set the feedback amount for the operator. We now vary the level of the operator. We can hear now that the harmonic content of the output signal varies with the level of the operator. If the level is very low, even high amount of feedback hardly make a difference. If the level is maximum, we can definitely hear the effect of the feedback. If we set an envelope for the operator’s level, with a very long attack, we can hear the signal morphing from a sinewave to a sawtooth wave.
I can definitely imagine some situations in which the FM-Zone behavior is preferable. However there are some situations in which I would prefer the Reface DX behavior. Is it possible to reproduce this behavior ?
My most sincere apologies if a more thorough analysis of the documentation would have yielded the answer. In any case, congratulations for this amazing synth.
