Overdubs in Dorico

Hi,

I was wondering if there’s a way to add overdub-lines to a score.
I’m not talking about optionally supressing certain notes in different passes when using repeats.
I’m looking for a way to add - where necessary - additional staves that disappear when not in use.
At first I thought of using the divisi option but of course the extra lines would be referred to as divisi-lines. This would be very confusing because divisi and overdub are often used interchangeably. In finale this was very easy to arrange so that there was no confusion possible. I hope there is a simple solution for this in Dorico as well.

Thanks in advance

Nicolas

Right-click on a staff and select Staff->Extra staff above or below. Then Staff->Remove staff when you don’t need it anymore. Or Staff->Create Ossia above.

Hi Jesper,

Thanks for your reply.
I’ve tried it but Dorico says that this is not possible for Section players (it’s a string section).

I’m also having issues with sub-brackets in Divisi.

The cello should have a sub-bracket here but I can’t seem to enable it.

Thanks in advance!

I’m not talking about divisi, but add staff or ossia. That’s possible with section players. This is with section players. Are you using Condensing?

Hi Jesper,

This is what Dorico replies when trying to add an extra staff

When I add an ossia it works but then the ossia is printed smaller and is still not labeled as an overdub on the score. I’ve tried working my way around the problem a bit by adding extra OD-staves for each section that remain hidden when empty.

It’s kind of the approach I used in Finale but I’m still struggling with the parts though. In engrave mode the score looks fine.

I’ve been able to add the extra lines to the parts. In the score, the correct staff names appaer but in the parts they don’t appear. I already found a way to display them as a default but I only need the staff name to appear when there’s an OD (and only on the OD).

I’m also struggling with the condensing behavour for the Divisi in Dorico. I’ve read there’s a possibility to insert a “condensing change” for a certain passage but it doesn’t seem to be working for me. I’ve selected the passage in engrave mode, I’ve opened the “Condensing change” dialog, I’ve enabled “manual condensing” and I’ve indicated that I want “no condensing” for the specific passage but Dorico keeps the Divisi on one staff. What am I missing?

I would be perfectly happy disabling condensing for parts all together. Then I could input the Divisi that I want on 1 staff as two separate layers and only use the Divisi-tool when I want two separate staves. That way I could at least choose which approach it would like to use for a certain passage.

The problem is that I also have staff spacing issues in the parts when the Divisi is on two staves. I’ve tried to fidle around with the spacing settings but Dorico keeps putting systems through each other.

If I make the Inter-system gap bigger, the staves of the divisi run into each other.
I’ve been struggeling for hours and hours trying to make a working template for my next project but it still doesn’t work.

Thanks for your help!
Nicolas

The scale factor for Ossia staff is in Engraving Options>Staves>Ossias (default is 2/3rds).

The labelling options for Ossia staff is in Layout Options>Staves and systems>Ossias and Extra staves

You can label the divisi anything you want so I would just use Divisi

That’s a really good suggestion. Thanks!

Theres an option in layout options for this - yours might be on braced staves

Thanks!
