Hi,
My friend who recently converted from Finale sent this file, and I can’t figure out why these staves are all bunched on top of each other. I played around with the vertical spacing options, but even when I changed the staff to staff group and inter-system gap from 8 to 15 spaces, the score didn’t budge.
I saw that some pages had system breaks but no overrides, and even after removing the system breaks, the staves were still the same distance away from each other.
I also changed the rastral size. Didn’t work.
Thank you!

Can you please upload the project - even just this system.

Hi Daniel,
Thank you for your reply. Here is a snippet of the project:
Example.dorico (1.9 MB)
If you look at the page in Engrave mode, you’ll see that Dorico think the frame is 168% full – that means that in trying to apply all of your settings, Dorico had to squeeze more music on the page than it thinks will fit. Anything much over 100%, and it’s likely that the spacing will not look good.
I started by using the Library Manager to reset the Vertical Spacing settings to the factory defaults. The page looks better already, but Dorico still thinks it’s 123% full. When you have a frame that’s overfull, increasing the vertical spacing gaps doesn’t actually make things better; Dorico already thinks it doesn’t have enough room in the frame, so telling it to move things further apart won’t work.
After resetting the gap settings, I changed the space size to 3pts, which is in between Rastral 7 and 8. Now the frame fullness is down to 95%, and it looks much better.
If that space size is too small for your taste, then you need to make more vertical room on the page in other ways. You could try making your margins smaller, or making the text frame with the title smaller, or getting rid of the frame with the copyright (if you don’t need it) and then making the music frame smaller. All of those will give you a little more space and will then let you increase the space size. Just be careful to keep the frame fullness under 100%.

Asher,
I never understood the percentages at the bottom of the pages in engrave mode until now. Makes a lot of sense. I changed the page size from letter to tabloid and that fixed everything. Thank you so much for the insight.
